Angry Disney Nerd here, and here's my latest episode. Yes, I know, I'm not really the Angry Disney Nerd, but who cares?
"101 Dalmatians" is one of the most well-made Disney Animated Classics of all time. It's also one of Disney's most popular franchises. There was so much stuff made to promote it. There was a sequel, a live-action remake, and a ton of merchandise.
We got the board game, which was awesome. There were some computer games that were pretty nifty at the time. We had a line of clothing, gear, and a ton of plushies. Aww, how great it is to snuggle with one of these adorable dalmatians! We had Lucky, Patch, Jewel, but this one, I...wait, that's not mine, get that the **** out of here!
Being a child of the 90's, I was such a huge dalmatian fan, I just couldn't get enough of them, even though they were everywhere. This was back when dalmatians and cartoon shows were the best things ever. Cartoon shows, I don't think need an introduction, cos they define the word "classic". Now when the late 90's came around, there was a moment when I became just psyched. When I heard that there was going to be an animated TV series of "101 Dalmatians", I sh*t my pants! Literally! sh*t came out of my ass, and I sky-rocketed through the roof!
I wasn't sure if this show was going to be good or not. Disney had a tendicie to fail when it comes to making animated series' based on their movies. That's what happened to "The Little Mermaid", "Aladdin" and "The Mighty Ducks", but "Timon & Pumbaa" was pretty good. I decided to check it out, and the minute it came on, I just glared at the TV screen and didn't look away for a second! This was the #1 cartoon that stole my heart and changed my life forever!
The only real dissappoint ment about this show is the fact that it had a really short run. Only 65 episodes were made, and they aired them all in like 6 months. That's just because Disney had this stupid rule to have each of it's cartoon series' a limit of 65 episodes. Thankfully, the creators of this show were curteous enough to have a majority of the episodes contain 2 seperate adventures, so that made it feel more like the series had more than just 65 episodes.
Yes, I know what you're thinking. Why am I psyched about this show? Well, let me ask you this. Who were the target audience of this series? Kids. Preferably younger kids. Well, I may be in my 20's, but heck, I'm still a kid at heart. I don't see anything wrong with that.
One of the things that grined my sh*t about this show is that there was so much stuff I was expecting to see happen that didn't happen at all. Ever since I started watching the show, I constantly have been asking myself numerous questions about it. I asked myself stuff like: -Are the pups going to form a rock band? -Are the pups going to do a totem pole disguise? -Is there gonna be a video game based on the series? -Are they gonna make comics of the series to put in "Disney Adventures"? Well, guess what? The answer to all of those questions is "No". And that really pissed me off. It was like landing on the 0 in Roulette. Everyone loses. It seemed to me like it was just a big "**** you" to all the fans of the show who were expecting something incredible like that to happen. And you know what else? This series had a lack of merchandising! That's why it was never as popular as "Rugrats" or "The Simpsons" or whatever the hell the biggest shows on the planet were at the time. I'll bet the creators of this show were payed minimum wage.
How can anyone hate this show? It's so great. Cadpig is such an amazing character, while my favorite character is still Lucky, and ironically, he's a great character too!
So anyway, you get the picture. Regardless of how popular it was or however many people knew it actually existed, Disney still managed to make a classic series that I will truly cherrish forever. So now, I'm gonna raise my glass and say, "Long Live the 101 Dalmatians!"

"101 Dalmatians: The Series". I saw it, I loved it, it's awesome. But if you saw my previous review on it, you may already know that. So why am I reviewing it again? Because it's such an awesome show that I can just go on and on about it!
Even though, I loved the show, I still didn't quite give it a 100% score as a series. There are still some things that could use some improvement. So just to let you guys get something from my perspective, here are 5 things I think should have been done to improve this series.
#1 is going to be a better intro.
Unlike most of the other shows I've seen in the 80's and 90's, this show didn't have as memorable a theme song. It's just not as catchy or appealing compared to the theme to "DuckTales" or "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" or even "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh". To be fair with my fandom, it's not one of the worst TV themes of all time. There were definately much worse ones like "Spongebob Squarepants" and "Alf: The Animated Series" for example. Still, the theme song still makes me cry whenever I hear it because it brings back such fond memories. Also, the way the intro is layed out just doesn't look appealing at all. It looks like we're being carried through this crazy negative dalmatian demension. Also, what kinda pisses me off is the fact that in the second season, they show different episode clips, and Lucky's action on his title card are different, but everything else is exactly the same. Wouldn't you have liked to see Rolly and Cadpig do something different? I would have.
#2 is a better use of characters.
Now, don't get me wrong. I love Lucky, Cadpig and Rolly with all my heart. They make well for perfect main characters. It's just the additional characters who are used over and over again. We're not interested in Cruella or the two **** balls Horace and Jasper. We want the puppies! Also, why do we need to see Lt. Pug so often in the show? He's the worst character on the show. I'm sick of seing him always ruin the pups' fun! He's an absolute disgrace to the series! Then there's Cornelia, who keeps trying to seperate Spot from the pups so that she can act like a chicken. I mean, isn't this show called "101 Dalmatians"? What's up with all these extra characters? Ed Pig? Dumpling? Lucy? What about Two-Tone? She only got spotlight in 1 episode, and she only had a speaking role in 3 others. I'm a member of a messageboard with fans of the series, and she's a mega fan favorite on that board. And you know what? I wouldn't have minded seeing her recur as a character a few more times. I would have loved to see her and Lucky do some cute stuff together.
#3...Better puppy action.
Now don't get me wrong here either. I love all the puppy action that goes on in this series. However, it seems like a lot of the stuff I see happen in every episode is basically the same thing over and over again. After you watch every episode five times or more, it gets so redundant and boring. Why can't they do stuff that's a little more unique? What I said before, two of the things I've been wanting to see the main pups do in the series was form a totem pole disguise and form a rock band. This series was a perfect opportunity for them to do those things! Why didn't they do them? Well, let me answer my own question. A totem pole disguise probably wouldn't make sense, because if you look at Lucky Cadpig and Rolly and how they compare to the size of humans, they're tiny. Even if they stack up on one another, they still won't make much of a difference. Lucky's head would only go up to a regular human's shin. They'd be as small as a Munchkin...No, wait, I think they'll actually be smaller than a Munchkin! What shrimps! Also, do you think they'd find a trench coat that size? I don't think so. A rock band would make even less sense. This is another size problem. The insrtuments would be more than twice as big as the pups themselves! Also, look at their hands. They've got paws! There's no way Lucky would be able to play a guitar or Cadpig a keyboard or Rolly drums...well, that may be possible, so I take back that last one. Still, I really wish they did it.
#4, Better humor.
I can't really tell which one of the main characters is supposed to be to comic relief. I mean, we've got Lucky with his jokes, Cadpig and her big words, Rolly and his doofus attitude, and Spot and her clown routine. I like their personalities, but which one is supposed to be the funny one? I don't care who, but make up your ****ing minds! The other characters are the same way. Look at Roger and Anita. They have some jokes that they pull up their sleeves. And Cruella, well, she's not funny at all.
And finally, #5, which is probably the most important thing of all, more episodes.
I don't understand why Disney had this 65 episode limit for their shows during the 90's. I mean, other shows have run a lot longer than that. "The Simpsons", "Rugrats", "Spongebob", "Dragonball Z". Even "DuckTales" had 100 episodes, so there was no excuse. I saw the three-part episode when it aired in March of 1998, which, little did I know, was the final episode of the series. They should have made more episodes to this series, or at least come up with a better series finale. Or better yet, at the very end of the series finale, after the fade out, there should have been some closing text that would inform viewers that the series has ended it's production. It should have said: "Congratulations! You just wasted your time watching this incomplete show. You've proved your nerdiness. Now go **** yourself!"
So, as you can see, if you're a big hard core dalmatian fan as I am, and you watch this series, you'll see plenty of ups and downs. If you think the series is in some ways incomplete, believe me, you'll be tempted to write fanfics. I know I was! Right now, I'm wondering if Disney is making any future plans for the 101 Dalmatians franchise; I guess only time will tell. Well, thanks for listening, and good night.

Nice idea. I have some thoughts on these flaws you pointed out:
#1: I'm not a music head, so I really can't complain. I know the series wouldn't have won a spot on TV Guide's "Top 50 Best Theme Songs" list, but it wasn't the worst (I heard the theme for Camp Candy, that was lame).
#2: Can't complain here. I love Lucky, Cadpig and Rolly but I think the other Dals could use some airtime.
Show needs more of: Pongo, Perdita, Two-Tone, Tripod, Wizzer, Dipstick, Patch Show needs physical appearances of: Jewel, Fidget, Penny, Freckles, Pepper Other non-Dal characters I didn't mind: Blaze, Lance, Mayor Ed Pig, Mooch, Duchess and Princess, Rebecca, some others I can't think of right now (I may need sleep) Show needs less of: Spot, Cornelia, Dumpling, and...see above. Just get rid of: Lt. Pug (the show doesn't need him. I mean, we already have the Colonel, the Captain and Sgt. Tibbs. If the whole "Bark Brigade" thing is absolutely necessary, why not have one of those three run it? I mean, really, Pug has NO redeeming qualities! He's the show's rock bottom worst character! Did I mention I need sleep?)
#3: I don't know here. I mean, they're puppies, so they would act like puppies would. However, I wouldn't have minded if they did things to act like human children would (but try to find a middle ground--I mean, I once read on a show called "My Little Pony Tales" where the ponies in that show were so humanized that there was no point in them being ponies. And no, I never once watched that show, just an opinion the imdb that I read).
#4: I don't truly agree here. I really like it if all the characters are allowed to be funny. As an example...
Captain Planet and the Planeteers: This was a show meant to preach messages about saving the environment. I really couldn't care about four of those kids (Kwame, Linka, Gi and Ma-Ti), because, well...they were holy knights. They were more concerned about the keeping-the-Earth-clean duties than they were in they were in actually having lives. They cared more about being Planeteers than they did about being alive. Who'd want to get to know somebody who only cares about their job? Predictability KILLS characters, extra dimensions make them cool. Only Wheeler (the American) actually LIKED the idea of goofing off and having fun. Without him this show would be so bland it'd make the bass fishing network seem like NFL Football.
Case in point:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1980s cartoon): April, Splinter and the Turtles all got to be funny (well, Leonardo was pretty much the straight Turtle, but still, he got a few good lines), and I loved how Shredder was so malicious, so evil and so utterly despicable...yet, you couldn't stop laughing at him 'cause he was just that funny. Not to mention Bebop and Rocksteady; they were just plain hilarious! I mean, it'd be really bland if the only funny Turtle was Michaelangelo.
Ed, Edd n Eddy: All the characters are funny to some degree (almost...Nazz doesn't seem particularly funny and Double D is kinda sorta the straight Ed, but still, they're not immune from physical abuse) and I like how the abuse is varied between the characters so it doesn't feel predictable. Imagine if the only character getting abused was Ed. Is it funny at first? Of course. If it happened to him and only him, would it consistently be funny? Probably not.
I can think of one very strong example of a show where it feels like only one character is allowed to be funny (especially in the later seasons):
The Simpsons: during the later seasons of the show, it feels like Homer Simpson is the only character that's supposed to be funny. Things that Bart would do in the earliest seasons was just 'picked up' by Homer later on (and some things that happened just aren't funny to start with...I mean, Homer getting naked out in public is funny, but what's funny about Homer getting raped by a panda?). A prime example of only one character truly being allowed to be funny (in this show) is in the opening. Sometimes, they totally omit Bart's "blackboard" gag, yet, they NEED to have the couch gag. In (almost) every couch gag, many times, one character will be singled out. Who? Read on...
Who's going to get conked on the head? Homer. Who's going to get picked up by the crane claw? Homer. Who's everyone going to gang up on in the bumper cars? Homer. Who's going to lose the remote to another family member? Homer. Who's everyone going to sit on top of? Homer. Who's going to get speared? Homer. Who won't be allowed admittance to the couch? Homer. Who's going to have a heart attack? Homer. Who's parachute won't open? Homer's. Who won't the firemen catch? Homer. (sensing a pattern?)
Why is Homer the only one consistently getting singled out? Why not vary it a little? Why not Bart? Why not Lisa? Why not Maggie? Why not Marge? Why not the Grandpa? Why not the pets? Bart and the Grandpa are funny, so it'd generate some laughs. Other characters like Marge and Lisa aren't funny, but it'd probably still be funny--'cause at times, it feels like the show can "play it too safe"--sometimes, you just want the show to "get a little darker" and show Marge or Lisa get what they probably deserve. I mean, is it funny to see Homer get singled out the first time? Yes, of course. Is it funny if it happens to him over and over and over again? I wouldn't think so. If Homer got singled out from time to time and they spaced it out between characters, of course it'd be funny; it's not a predicted action.
#5: More episodes would be nice. Strong agreement. While in some cases, it's better to end a show before the writing turns lame (or the cast starts to sing, or if characters leave with no explanation, or they introduce a "Cousin Oliver", or if they made a sequel to "Horace and Jasper's Big Career Move", etc), sometimes, 65 episodes just ain't enough. I mean, I'm not asking Disney to have "101 Dalmatians: the Series" end with them all facing a plot that would spell "DOOMSDAY" and will likely result in the idea that it would be EXTREMELY likely that they will all end up dead (like what happened at the end of "Dinosaurs"--geez, that was a SERIOUSLY tragic way to give closure to a show!); if they're not going to continue the show, make a finale where the Main Pups (and some of the others) end up beating Cruella DeVil once and for all, kinda like what Disney did with Merlock in "DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp" or what they did with Dr. Hamsterviel in "Leroy and Stitch". Like one of the lines in "Scary Movie" said: "Violence on TV doesn't cause violence. CANCELLING TV shows, THAT causes violence!"
Anyway, I'm up too late. Good night, everybody...

With all due respect, you don’t seem to have a full understanding of the situation. 101 Dalmatians: The Series may not have been the most successful program, but I believe that Disney, as well as the individuals who created the show, managed to create something that was very entertaining. All of the characters, including Spot and Lieutenant Pug, served valid roles and I feel that each of them managed to bring comedic and episodic value to the series. I’ve written a detailed character guide for nearly every important character in the series, so, I believe I know what I’m talking about.
Also, I feel that the series had a proper beginning and end. You claim that there was no closure to the series, but I believe that Cruella’s epiphany would permit the Dearlys to have more peace in the future. Sure, her mischievous ways wouldn’t immediately end, but, I believe that the series took a rather unique approach, which we should commend, since 101 Dalmatians: The Series was a unique program.
Either way, there’s no point in me rambling on about this. I’m glad you’ve written up another review, but, I strongly disagree with many of the points you made. I’ve always been one to prefer to cherish what we have, rather than to lament over what we don’t have. I loved 101 Dalmatians: The Series and I will support the show for as long as I’m alive; there were a few episodes that I felt could be better, but, I’d never express that drastic changes should have been made.

I want to talk about "101 Dalmatians 3", which is a sequel that is rumoured to be made.
To start things off, "101 Dalmatians" is my all-time favorite Disney Animated Classic, and probably also my favorite Disney movie altogether. It's a really fun and great movie. It's like, the main dogs make great lead characters, the human characters have some good attributes, the puppies are adorable, and hey, this movie came out when Walt Disney was still alive, so it had Walt's special touch.
Now, in the mid-90's, when I heard that a live-action remake of "101 Dalmatians" was being made, I got so excited, I couldn't wait to go see it. As a result, the live-action version became a hit, and a lot found it to be even better than the original. That's interesting, because I thought the live-action version of "101 Dalmatians" was inferior to the original. It left me cold, much like the live-action remake of "The Jungle Book" did. I mean, it's like everything in this movie is completely butchered from the original. Roger's a video game designer rather than a musician, Anita's a fassion designer who works for Cruella, Cruella has a much larger role in this movie, the animals don't talk (I mean, they did that in "Homeward Bound" and "Babe", so why not "101 Dalmatians"?), and there's an overuse of slapstick comedy. But hey, I gotta give them credit. Glenn Close I'd say was perfect for the role of Cruella De Ville, and if it weren't for this movie, we probably never would have had the wonderful cartoon series that followed it.
Neither one of the movies followed the book, and I think that's part of the reason why Tim Burton decided to make "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". While I loved the original (which didn't follow the book), I thought the remake was great, but it felt kind of unnecessary. Well, anyway, back on topic.
Then, out of the blue comes "102 Dalmatians". At first, I thought it was a joke. Making a sequel to a remake on a movie is just out of the box. Then, I just came to realize that this was just so that Disney could introduce some new characters to the franchise. It's just another scheme to sell merchandise.
But then comes another animated dalmatian movie: "101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure". This was part of when Disney started this gimmick of making straight to DVD sequels to its Animated Classics. I was kind of reluctant to watch it, because I thought it might be bad. I mean, "The Lion King" is an incredible movie, but "The Lion King II" is just a pile of vomit. However, "Lady and the Tramp" has never been one of my favorite Disney movies, but "Lady and the Tramp II" I felt kind of enjoyable. So, at first I thought that the formula is this: A good movie leads to a sh*tty sequel, but a not so good movie leads to a sequel that's not as sh*tty.
Well, when I saw "101 Dalmatians II", it actually felt genuine. It had a certain formula that made me enjoy it. It was then that I realized that it's not a matter of which the original movie is good or bad, it's the time span. If "101 Dalmatians II" came out soon after the original, it would have sucked.
Now, since the beginning of 2007, I've been hearing rumours that "101 Dalmatians 3" is in the process. Maybe it'll happen, or maybe it won't. We're nearing the end of the year now, and still, nothing has popped up on IMDb. It's very likely that Disney is not planning on making it since recently, they announced that they've discontinued making sequels to their animated classics. If they don't want to make the movie, I respect that.
To give you my honest thoughts, if they were to make "101 Dalmatians 3", it should be animated, not live-action. The animated movies have a different kind of formula than the live-action ones do. And if they decide to do it that way, it should be done with traditional 2D animation, not CG. It's not animation that we need to rely on, it's the story. That's part of the reason why I love the series so much. It's not the animation. There's a chemistry; there's some kind of comedic genius when those four main pups are all together. It's just genuine classic. Speaking of the main pups, if "101 Dalmatians 3" is to focus on specific characters, it should focus mainly on Pongo, Perdita, Lucky, Rolly and Cadpig, and for support, Two-Tone, Patch, Jewel, Wizzer and Dipstick. See? If they stick with that animation and use that special chemistry they used in the series, the movie should be incredible, and we'll have a great trilogy of animated movies that all leave you with a happy feeling.
Again, I really don't know if the movie is being made, if it's in the works, or if Disney's even considering it. All I'm saying is that I think that a third "101 Dalmatians" animated movie should be made. I know that Disney said they stopped the whole sequel thing, but they have made "Aladdin 3", "Cinderella 3", and coming up, "The Little Mermaid 3" and a spin-off on "Peter Pan", so I don't see why we shouldn't have "101 Dalmatians 3".
That's all I gotta say.
