Alright
No doubt about it, if you’re a member of this forum; you’ve probably seen 101 Dalmatians. We’ve had a long line of these guys; there was the book, the sequel to the book (Starlight Barking) Disney then made an animated movie (which I heard was the highest grossing movie of the 60’s) we had a live-action version, a sequel to the live-action movie (102 Dalmatians) we’ve had a sequel to the original animated movie (101 Dalmatians 2: Patch’s London Adventure) and in the Kingdom Hearts we got to help Pongo and Perdy find them. But what I’m really here to talk about today is the series.
I remember when I was about 4-6; I’d get up early on Saturday mornings, I watched either Inspector Gadget on Channel 4 or Disney’s Diggit on ITV. Diggit was one of the best things that ever happened to television; we had documentaries about the making of an animated series, watch the actual shows, no fuss, unlike today with Disney Channel; where they never show any of the classics anymore. I remember being a big fan of the Dalmatians, so was my older sister; she drew them all the time (which is kind of like what I do now)
The first episode that my memory remembers watching was the one where Lucky, Rolly and Cadpig snuck into the movies and the one where they showed you the making of it.
The series had its ups and downs; I’ll start off with the downs.
One thing I never got about the show is that; they somehow magically moved from London, England, to a city named Gruteley in America. What was the problem with staying in England? Did anyone do research on which country the Dalmatians lived when making the series?
Another thing that annoys me is that there weren’t that many episodes, only about 65. It’s because Disney had this strange rule on how no series can go over 65 episodes. Why Not? You did for Ducktales; I suppose that show was more popular though. But thankfully they did it in 2 stories in one episode format so it looked like there were more.
One other thing that really wound my gears up were that the ONLY pups that ever did anything were the three main ones and that stupid chicken, the other times you just see the other pups sitting in the background smiling.
With all the amount of things the Background Pups did, I think you were better of naming the show; 3 Pups, A Chicken and 98 Background Characters.
It was such rare occasions when any other pup spoke, one of the biggest examples were Patch and Wizzer. The only time I remember hearing Wizzer was when he told Two-Tone that she was blocking their aim. And with Patch, we did see him a lot (how couldn’t you? Thank the lord he had that Rope collar so we could know it’s him) and I was praying to God that he says something; literally, I place my palms together and started asking for Patch to say something.
I watched a couple of more episodes, in which Tri-Pod (Lucky All-Star) and Dipstick (Love 'Em and Flea ‘Em, Dog Food Day Afternoon) talked (I swear every time Dipstick talks, he sounds different) until I reached an episode called “Our Own Digs”. This episode was marked down as one of the worst ones (I’ll explain why later) but the thing that gave it a meaning to still exist is that Patch said two lines in the first minute (he said “Watch This!” and “No, I got it!” whilst playing catch the chew toy with Tri-Pod, Mooch, Dipstick and Wizzer) I was so happy that I wanted to shout out the window that There Is A God!
So giving other Dalmatians the lime light would have made the series better.
Next point is that the characters they used. We got to see characters we first saw and fell in love with from the movie and book like, Lucky, Rolly, Cadpig, Two-Tone, Wizzer, Patch, Diptick, Pongo, Perdita, Roger, Anita, Nanny, Cruella, Horace and Japser. But some other characters we know where no where to be seen.
We remember Jewel, Penny, Freckles and Fidget from the movies don’t we? Jewel was mentioned a couple of times but she never made any physical appearance.
The original characters were alright, I thought it good, but then the writers crossed the limit; they made these new characters; one of them even became one of the main pups.
Spot the chicken; all she ever did was being scared of everything and upstaged everybody. There were some episodes that made her the main character, those episodes were absolutely Terrible. They were worse than a Straight To Disk Sequel, watching those episodes made me want to puke; I was getting a bucket out from the shed as the episode went on. Not only were Spot’s episodes bad, they weren’t even Bad bad; they were so bad, it would make the Terminator cry.
Remember when I said earlier that “Our Own Digs” wasn’t a good episode, well the reason for that was it had another character made up for the series; LT. Pug.
This guy was worthless; he shouldn’t have the right to exist, he shouts at everyone, he ruins the pups time, he makes everyone feel bad for themselves and he doesn’t show any help to anyone whatsoever. I hope he dies and goes to level infinite of torture in Hell.
Back on subject with the main pups, I heard that in an original draft of the series, the main pups were going to be, Lucky, Rolly, Cadpig, Two-Tone, Patch, Dipstick, Wizzer, Jewel, Penny and Freckles. But Disney feared that it would flood the show with too many main characters so they limited down to Lucky, Rolly, Cadpig and came up with Spot, I’m sure you all would agree that Two-Tone would have been a better choice for Spots place.
Flood the show with too many main characters? Alright, let’s count how many main characters are in other Disney shows, Ducktales first
There’s Scrooge, LaunchPad, Huey, Dewy and Louie, Webby, Bubba (The cave duck), Mrs. Beakley, Flintheart Glomgold, Genie (from the movie) And Donald Duck made an appearance in a couple of episodes, so that is about 11.
Recess; there was TJ, Vince, Spinelli, Gretchen, Mikey and Gus. That is round about 6, but take into the fact that most of the episodes had other kids from the playground having a main part in an episode or two, like the Ashley girls, King Bob, Randall, Principal Prickly, Swinger Girl, Guru Kid and Cornship Girl (sp?)
What excuse do the Disney team have to not give any other Dalmatians a chance?
They did make it up to Patch, Wizzer and Dipstick though, with Patch; he got his own movie, Dipstick; he was the father to the main pups in 102 Dalmatians, and Wizzer got his own line of books and a video game.
Those are the main down parts of the series, here are some up sides.
I liked the voice acting put into it. It was clear and I could understand what they were saying. The animation was done nice and I also enjoyed some jokes made in it.
Remember when I said that not many other pups did anything, but that encouraged people to use their imaginations. If it weren’t for them having not have other pups do stuff, we wouldn’t have these great character that people on the forum come up with.
Like they say though, you got to take the sweet with the bitter. The series has its ups, it has its downs, but it is a good series together and I am looking forward that the original movie is coming out on DVD next year.
It’s a good series and I like it.
But unfortunatly, since the series is not being shown on Disney Channel anymore, i can't watch any new ones.
If anyone has got any i haven't seen, could you email me them?
