Has anybody else seen this? I'm amazed at how the axle just ripped off of the car! Must have been something to see!

That's the 2003 Daytona 500. Newman got into the #49 Dodge of Ken Schrader and both cars caught the outside wall in the trioval, Newman hit with enough force to break a lot of parts in the rear end of the car. The damage from that impact caused Newman to lose control and spin out where the damage to car caused a serious amount of air to rush under the car and lift it into the air (same principle as an airplane taking off) with the following impact on the ground sending the car into a series of rolls. This is called a 'blowover' and they can be among the more serious racing accidents. Here's the video... www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pq3i_2-g-gA crash like this can actually be somewhat good for the driver, when a race car starts coming apart like it it takes a lot of force of the impact so less goes to the driver. It took Newman a few moments to get out of his destroyed Dodge Intrepid after that but he was uninjured and walked away from the crash.

Thanks for the info and link to the video, RaceFan. One of the more nasty wrecks I've ever seen.
