Well, I just saw Despicable Me 2, and it turns out...Trey was right! Plus my expectations were met! It was indeed awesome! I'm not sure how AniMatt will rate it, but I hope he gives it a good score! I would probably rate each aspect of the movie like this: Story: A Characters: A+ Animation: A+ Jokes: C+ Songs: A- I also saw a preview for Free Birds. Now, if I was to go back to the beginning of the year, and I knew about all the official animated films to come out this year, here's what I would have said... Escape from Planet Earth: Oh God! The Croods: Interesting. Epic: Uh-uh! Equestrian Girls: Wait, this'll be in theaters? Monsters U: I'll pass. Despicable Me 2: Yes! Turbo: Probably not. Planes: Might have potential. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2: WTF? Free Birds: Maybe. Frozen: Can't wait! That look good? Despicable Me 2 won the box-office race! It now scored $142 million for the weekend in just the US and is considered a success (with a budget in the $70 mil range) and with The Lone Ranger... it looks Disney is going to have another John Carter-sized bomb (it cost $215 mil and only made $48 million and it's doubtful it will succeed in the foreign market because Westerns are rarely successful outside the US). Anyway, I'm going to do what Belchic did here: Escape from Planet Earth: Yikes! The Croods: Possible. Epic: Maybe. My Little Pony: Equestria Girls: Doubt. Monsters University: Uh, no. Despicable Me 2: Great! Turbo: Hope so. Planes: Nope, sorry. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2: D’oh! Free Birds: Money’s on no. Frozen: Definite yes! Side note: AniMat reviewed Despicable Me 2. Looking at the new list of animated films for this year and seeing how the current ones are doing and what's anticipated as to what's still to come, I have a prediction to AniMatt's Best/Worst picks:
Top 5 Best of 2013:
#5 - Monsters University #4 - Planes #3 - Epic #2 - Despicable Me 2 #1 - Frozen
Honorable Nod: Turbo
Top 5 Worst of 2013:
#5 - The Croods #4 - Equestrian Girls #3 - Free Birds #2 - Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 #1 - Escape from Planet Earth
You think that'll be it, Trey?

I think The Croods will have a higher rank than Monsters University.
Also, he hasn't reviewed My Little Pony: Equestria Girls, so I don't know if he'll count it.

Right now I am a little divided on Turbo. It might be because I'm going on vacation, but unless some of the reviews are looking really good, I may just skip it and wait for The Smurfs 2.

The bad guy in Turbo, race car driver Guy Gagne who starts as Turbo's hero before they become rivals, has me worried. According to the film French-Canadian Gagne is a 5-time Indy 500 winner... which is something no one has ever done in real life (The record is four).
Seems like they wanted a godmodded French villain...but backed off of the last part by making him from Quebec instead (of course French-Canadian racer Jaques Villenueve won the real Indy 500 in 1995 while no French drivers have won since 1920 but Villenueve was a pretty nice guy).

Well, I'll tell you one thing that's been done to death right here: The film's antagonist turning out to be an idol of one of the protagonists.

I recall seeing that trope in Up, what other films are there with that?
Is there even a TVTrope based around "Antagonist is Protagonist's Hero"?
Wait...If this film is about a Snail...and there's French...this film is going to have a Snail Eating scene, isn't it?

I also recall it happening on Home on the Range, and while he wasn't the film's main antagonist, he was still a bad guy.

It sorta looks like Turbo may not live up to the success of The Croods. With The Conjuring and Red 2 looking promising and the success of Despicable Me 2 (plus Monsters University is still in theatres) it may just barely make $30 million.
On another note it looks like Ryan Reynolds' other movie, R.I.P.D., looks like a D.O.A.

Well, that's a little unusual. There seemed to have been a lot of hype for Turbo this year as opposed to The Croods, which came out with very little promotion. Seeing that The Croods did better in the box office than Turbo seems very...role-reversing, if you ask me.

Well, I saw SOME of 'Monsters Uni.' yesterday and I find it good. It's better than most College Set Films where the Plot is simply "Let's throw a party...and then something happens".
Although, some of you may be thinking "Wait, 'SOME'?" Well...The Cinema I was viewing the Film in...Had a Power Cut...and we had to evacuate the Cinema!
We only saw Forty Five Minutes or so of it too. Fortunately, we were given free tickets and my Sister & I are planning on seeing it tommorrow.
Any other Pups here have a Power Cut in the Cinema?

Well, AniMat reviewed Turbo. Interested in what he says? Here we go:
The Story - 3/10 The Animation - 8/10 The Characters - 5/10
Turbo (2013) - 5/10 Mediocre!
He says the movie feels like a full-blown Cars knock-off with maybe a little Ratatouille. It's almost to the point you'd swear they had more than a little inspiration while writing it. He says the animation is really nice but not DreamWorks' finest, and many of the secondary characters are much one-note characters with only one odd quirk to distinguish them. In addition he does say Theo/Turbo is a dreamer that wants to be fast but not only does he become fast he's basically part car. He gets headlights, taillights, a radio and his one foot leaves tire tracks in his wake. This has no reason to happen other than to make jokes.
Gotta hand it to Ryan Reynolds--one weekend, two duds (the other being R.I.P.D.)
AniMat did end his review by saying it's funny how the animated films of this year go: now that we've seen the Cars rip-off, now it's time for the Cars spin-off (Planes).

Believe it or not Turbo actually cost MORE to make the CGI-fest that was R.I.P.D.
It seems odd they released two Ryan Reynolds films against each other. They did the same thing in 2006 when Ashton Kutcher’s Coast Guard action-drama The Guardian released against his animated Open Season. Then Open Season was a hit, The Guardian made back a little more than its budget where as Reynolds had both misfire.
Let’s be honest the plot of Turbo was a misfire from the word “Go,” although sometimes that works in animated films as the similar story-wise Ratatouille was brilliant. I was hoping from the trailers they made go with a light-hearted spoofy atmosphere but apparently they played it too straight for their own good. The money IndyCar invested in this was probably a mistake but they have a habit of promotional misfires (The split, working with Gene Simmons, etc.)

Trouble guys.
Now that Planes is out... the reviews are really bad. As of right now on Rotten Tomatoes it has a score of 27%.
If there's an upside to this... if he gives it a bad review (like he did with Turbo) when AniMat does his Best/Worst Animated Films of 2013 list Monsters University may have a chance to just make #5 on his "Best" list.
