Meanwhile, trailing behind the three cars was a silver 2008 Honda Fit. Adelaide “Appette” Dearly and Saffron “Saturn” Dearly had gotten a later start than the other eleven Dalmatians already well on their way. Their alarm didn’t go off at the right time, leaving the two to scramble and finish packing in a rush. After their scramble, they had gotten out on the road in a hurry, even challenging the speed limit a bit to try and catch up with the others.
19-year-old Appette was wearing a large lace top with white rabbits printed all over it with a white camisole underneath, leaving her shoulders and arms exposed, with jean shorts cutting off just past her hips and black leggings underneath the shorts, black high-top Converse sneakers, and a pair of floral-print sunglasses. She was driving with 16-year-old Saturn, who was wearing a blue pullover hoodie with a brighter blue design of various moons, planets, and stars on it, with a red T-shirt underneath it with a white star on the front, as well as jean shorts about the same length as Appette’s, and gray low-top Converse covered in white polka-dots. Saturn was halfway over the back seat, peering into the trunk and double-checking their supplies, to make sure nothing was forgotten in their haste.
“Okay...” Saturn muttered to herself as she held a small checklist in her paws. “Snacks, drinks, and coolers, check,” she said, pointing with her free paw to one red and one blue cooler bag; one filled with bottles of water and soda, and the other filled with dry snacks. “Luggage, check.” She said, pointing to two large rolling suitcases stacked on top of each other, one red with a yellow star pattern on it and a small Earth-shaped charm dangling off the zipper, and one pale green with a floral print. Both cases were filled with clothes and different pairs of shoes, as well as some hygiene-oriented items. “Personal bags-“ Saturn leaned forward and poked Appette’s purse, sitting on the center console. –and Appette’s purse, check.” She said, proceeding to point to one big blue and purple backpack sitting next to her on the seat, already unzipped, and one yellow travel bag lying next to the suitcase stack. Both bags contained some more snacks, as well as Saturn’s electronics (iPod, DVD player, and 3DS) and sunglasses in the backpack, and Appette’s iPad in the travel bag, with a few other hygiene things, books, and smaller clothing articles that wouldn’t fit in the suitcases.
Saturn proceeded to put her backpack on her lap and unzip the front pocket of the backpack, poking a finger around until she felt a small lump. She then zipped the pocket back up and pulled Appette’s purse into her lap, once again digging around until she felt another small lump, poking it open and feeling the edge of a card. She put the bag back, smiled, and looked at her list again. “Wallets and your credit card, check. Oh, and one more thing…” With an even bigger smile on her face, Saturn pulled out her most favorite comfort object nestled inside her backpack: a pale yellow duck plush named Cheese. “And Cheese, of course. Check! That’s it!” She hugged her plush and put him back inside the backpack, smiling at Appette in the rear-view and leaning towards her.
“Well, Appie,” she declared happily, “I think we’re good to go. I’m excited for this! I haven’t been on a road trip in such a long time!” Her tail wagged fervently as Appette chuckled. “Well, you certainly are excited Saffie, I’ll give you that. Now, if only I knew where exactly we were going,” she said, a hint of worry in her voice. Saturn just shook her head and smiled. “Leave it to me!” the younger Dal proclaimed, producing her cell phone from the front pocket of her space-garnished hoodie. She unlocked the main screen, searching for Flo’s cell phone number and wrote up a text message:
“Hi, Flo! It’s Saturn. Appette and I just got on the road, trying to catch up with you and the others. Could you please tell us where our destination is? Thank you!”
Once the message had been sent, Saturn got a can of Coke and a bag of chips out of the coolers, and curled up in the back seat of the Honda with her iPod Touch, putting on a song by Owl City and picking out an app to play on. Meanwhile Appette continued to drive, plugging her purple fifth-gen iPod Nano into the auxiliary cord, and putting on a playlist consisting of The Lumineers, Ingrid Michaelson, and The Decemberists. She relaxed and kept going, the pair getting closer to the other three cars minute by minute.
