Here's a new topic I decided to do. Similar to the topic we have about tv shows and why they got canceled, this one talks about bands and why they broke up.
Feel free to contribute to this, but here are some bands I know of that have broken up and their reasons as to why:
Band: The Beatles
Career Span: 1962-1970
Breakup Reason: During the twilight days of their career, the band was not getting along with each other very well since everyone wanted to do their own thing and not work as a team anymore. It also didn't help much that John Lennon was bringing Yoko into the studio, which distracted everybody. In 1970, when Paul McCartney announced he was starting a solo career, the other three decided it was best to all go their separate ways. John's assassination in 1980 destroyed any chances of a Beatles reunion ever happening. It was even less likely after George Harrison's death in 2001.
Band: The Bee Gees
Career Span: 1966-2003
Breakup Reason: Maurice Gibb died in 2003, and with him gone, the other two brothers knew they couldn't press on without him, so Barry and Robin went their separate ways. Robin later died in 2012.
Band: Creedence Clearwater Revival
Career Span: 1968-1972
Breakup Reason: They just didn't get along with each other very well.
Band: Dire Starits
Career Span: 1978-1993
Breakup Reason: Mark Knopfler wanted to focus more on being a soloist.
Band: The Doors
Career Span: 1967-1971
Breakup Reason: Jim Morrison's unexpected death in 1971 caused the band to breakup. Though the three remaining members made two more albums after Jim's death, but those are rare and so obscure that many people don't even count them as Doors albums.
Band: The Grateful Dead
Career Span: 1965-1995
Breakup Reason: Largely due to Jerry Garcia's death in 1995.
Band: Jethro Tull
Career Span: 1968-2011
Breakup Reason: Ian Anderson decided since he was basically all of Jethro Tull to have the band breakup and take the name with him.
Band: Led Zeppelin
Career Span: 1969-1980
Breakup Reason: John Bonham's death caused the rest of the band to leave the name behind since they were so hip and all one of a kind. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant both started solo careers and had a few reunions later on for events like Live Aid.
Band: The Police
Career Span: 1978-1983
Breakup Reason: Andy Summers and Stuart Copeland didn't like the new changes Sting was making to the sound of the band, so they broke up letting Sting continue his work by going solo.
Band: Peter, Paul and Mary
Career Span: 1961-1970
Breakup Reason: Each member wanted to focus on solo careers during most of the 70's before reuniting in 1978. However, in 2009, Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey went solo due to Mary Travers' death.
Band: The Ramones
Career Span: 1976-1995
Breakup Reason: Most of the band members were suffering health problems, and they each passed away within the decade after the release of their final studio album.
Band: Rush
Career Span: 1974-2016
Breakup Reason: All three members were suffering health problems asking it more difficult for them to perform on stage. Neil Peart’s death in 2020 made it inevitable that their career was over.
Band: Simon & Garfunkel
Career Span: 1964-1970
Breakup Reason: Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel both wanted to work more as soloists. They got back together in 1975 to write the song, "My Little Town", and they have since had several reunion tours over the decades but haven't done any new material together since.
Band: Alice Cooper
Career Span: 1969-1974
Breakup Reason: The band's lead singer, Vincent Furnier, was starting to put on more theatrical concerts for the band, but the rest of the band felt his theatrical talents were upstaging their musical talents. Starting in 1975, Vincent went solo but took the Alice Cooper name with him making it his new stage name.
