I decided to write a background story consisting of 2 or 3 parts for my new character December. Enjoy.
Blood Red Snow - Part 1
Alaska, USA 2 years ago
The snowy plains of Alaska are a beautiful sight to behold, and the home of many wolves and wolf dogs. However, it’s also a battlefield. Wolves are hunted for sport. The hunters used helicopters sometimes to shoot them from the air, giving them an unfair advantage over the defenseless canines. Such a kill is not hunting. It’s carnage. To kill without any real purpose but to say that you’ve killed something. The wolves were forced into hiding wherever they can find shelter. In the dark deep depths of a cavern, a small pack of wolves hid. There were about 10 adults, 7 males and 3 females. One of the females had a young litter of only 2 pups. The others were stillborn.
A young female pup, half wolf and half husky with gray and white fur and sky blue eyes yawned as she stood to her feet and stretched out. Her brother, who looked very similar, but had green eyes and a darker coat still lay asleep near by. “Mother...when will we get to eat?” she asked, her stomach growling.
“I don’t know, dear. It’s too dangerous to hunt in the middle of the day now. We’ll have to wait for nightfall.” An adult female looking identical to the pup said tenderly.
“I know it’s dangerous, but… we’re all very hungry… the pups especially. I’m going out.” A male with brown and white fur replied.
“You can’t go alone!” the female snapped back.
“I think we should all go…save for the pups. We’ll all watch out for each other.” Another male with a scar over his right eye said, standing to his feet, his deep gray, almost black fur littered with particles of snow.
“I suppose we don’t have any choices… you two stay here!” the mother wolf said to her two pups, following the pack out of the small cave.
As the pack left the cave, they were in a lightly forested area, sloping upward in front of them. They heard a faint sound in the distance but shrugged it off and struggled their way up the slope, low on energy from lack of food. As the reached the top, the exited the forested area and the noise became louder. In the distance, a small silhouette could be seen in the sun.
“It’s one of those infernal flying machines the hunters use…” The mother wolf said nervously.
“Don’t worry, certainly they can’t see us from this far.” The pack leader with the dark fur said.
In the chopper a good distance away, two humans, heavily clad in gear to protect them from the cold, harsh environment looked onward. One of them pointed his glove covered hand in the direction of the pack as they walked near the few snow covered trees.
“Hey, check it out… must be at least 8 of ‘em….” The human said.
“No…I see 10!” the pilot replied.
“Pull in just a little closer…” the hunter said, readying his gun, an M40 bolt action sniper rifle, commonly used by the U.S. Marines. “You are mine…” he said as the chopper got closer and closer. He peered through the scope of his rifle, the zoom feature bringing his target clear into sight. He was aiming for the mother wolf, his sight lined up perfectly with her shoulder as he pulled the trigger.
The canines heard the shot, but it was already too late. With a yelp, the wolf fell to the ground, blood pouring from the fresh wound on her shoulder, staining the snow beneath her.
“Back in the cave, the two pups ears flickered.
“Did you hear that, December?” the male pup asked.
“Yeah…you don’t think…” December replied with a gasp.
“Of course not… that couldn’t happen to them!” the brother said confidently.
Back at the scene where the mother lay dying, her mate, father of the pups ran up to his dying partner. He was the wolf dog with brown fur mentioned before. He whined as he nuzzled against her, her breaths far apart and weak.
“You stay right there…” the hunter said taking aim once more. He fired another shot and it hit the male square between the eyes. He fell dead instantly over the dying corpse of his mate, their blood mixing together in the snow.
“We have to move! Now!” the pack leader said.
“But… the pups….” One wolf said looking behind him.
“We don’t have time… and if we go that way, they’ll follow us… they’ll kill them too…” the leader replied as he ran ahead, the others following his example.
In the cave, the pups became more and more worried by the second.
“That’s it… they couldn’t have gone too far, right? I’m going to check up on them!” the male pup said walking towards the entrance to the cave.
“Are you crazy, Kota?” December cried.
“I’ll be back, don’t worry.”
“So you’re just leaving me here all alone?!”
“I’ll be back… I just wanna make sure they’re okay.”
“Promise?”
“I promise. I’ll be right back!” He said exiting the cave.
