for the record, this is not the final chapter, even if it does appear that way. It is the end of that story arc, however.
Volkner's Saga Part X
“I’m staying behind….sorry.” Eisenheim said, walking away from the others, who pressed on towards the old shack. Nearby, there was what appeared to be a cave, or tunnel.
“It hasn’t been being there….plus we saw those two hooligans go through before.” Astrid said.
“Could be a trap…” Shadow said.
“I’ll take the risk.” Volkner said going through ahead of the others. It turned out to be a small tunnel on the other side, was a large, open, desolate area. No grass at all, just rock and dirt. It was a cliff, in actuality, and it was a long way down. Sitting in the not too far off distance were Sigurd and Jay, both with their wings revealed, and their backs turned t the others. Volkner started to walk towards them, as Dirge began to follow.
“Everyone else should stay here unless something happens… the fewer casualties, the better.” Dirge said.
“So good of you to come. I’ve been expecting you.” Sigurd said, his back still turned with a twisted smile on his face.
Volkner tried to contain himself, but he just couldn’t. All his hate, and anger caused him to rush Sigurd. As he neared him, Sigurd turned and grabbed him by the throat.
“I’m not going to kill you this way… oh, no! I want to rough you up a bit first!” Sigurd said tossing the pup away.
Jay charged Volkner while he was down. When he was close enough, Volkner grabbed him, and falling onto his back, kicked Jay into the air, and over the cliff.
Volkner chuckled a bit and began to walk off, but stopped as Jay rose up, and landed, folding his wings as he touched ground.
At the same time all of this was going on, Dirge and Sigurd were having a fight of their own, mostly just dodging each other’s blows, neither one doing much damage to the other.
“You forget about these?” Jay said, stretching his wings. As he stretched them out, Astrid stepped forward a bit.
“Forgive me…..my old friend….” Astrid said, making a swirling motion with his paw. The wind began to blow, and form a current gathered together into a, literally, cutting wind. As it struck his wings, they both fell to the ground, only stubs protruding his back now.
“Fly your way out of this one…” Volkner said, charging Jay, as Jay rushed at him at the same time. The two locked there front paws, pushing against one another, but it seemed to be almost even. Volkner’s back paws lost their grip, and began to slide back. Taking notice of this, Shadow rushed to his aid. Both of the pups pushing against him at one time, Jay was forced to the edge of the cliff and eventually, over it.
Peering over the side, they watched as Jay fell to the distant ground. He was barely visible when he collided with the ground.
Shadow walked away, as Volkner continued looking down into the valley bellow.
“Jay….so it had to come to this….” Volkner said, unaware that Sigurd was heading for him. As he turned around he saw Dirge defeated on the ground, and Sigurd heading straight for him.
Sigurd simply shoved Volkner over the edge, but being close to the wall, Volkner grabbed the side of the cliff. He slid down the wall a short was, leaving marks in the cliff. Slowly, he climbed his way back up, growing weaker every inch he climbed. As he neared the top, he saw Sigurd looking down on him with that same twisted smile.
“How could my son be so weak…” Sigurd said, reaching down, and digging his left claw into Volkner’s.
“Heh….you mean Jay?....I never was your son….and I never will be….” Volkner said in pain, his own blood trickling down his leg, as he held on for his life.
Sigurd dismissed hat was said, slightly grinning as he reached for his other paw. Volkner was quick to let go of the wall with the uninjured paw, grabbing Sigurd’s own, and digging into his skin as deep as he could. Sigurd screamed as he released Volkner’s other paw.
Volkner Closed his eyes, as he knew the sacrifice he’d have to make. He let go of the wall, taking Sigurd with him. Because of Sigurd’s weight, he was thrown below Volkner.
Sigurd screamed as he stretched his wings in an attempt to fly, but falling downward, his back facing the ground, flight was an impossibility.
Volkner winced, as he his foot was grabbed by a heavily breathing Dirge. He opened his eyes, hanging over the cliff, watching Sigurd fall as Dirge hoisted him up.
“You did it!” Astrid said running towards Dirge and Volkner. Dirge collapsed of injury, and exhaustion as Astrid neared, Requiem and Nocturne walking a bit slower and Astrid.
“I was worried about ya…” Requiem said to his brother.
“You aren’t hurt too bad, are you, uncle Dirge?” Nocturne asked.
“I’ll live…” Dirge said with a chuckle.
“So…I guess you and your sister can go home now?” Shadow said.
“If Jay was right… about them being under someone else’s control….then it’s not safe yet. It’s me they want, and I’ll endanger my family if I go home.” Volkner said.
“I thought that your family was…?” Astrid said a little confused.
“Me and Amaranth were adopted shortly after all that…I’ll stay on the farm for now….until I know it’s safe at least.” Volkner said.
“Thanks…everyone….for everything. I couldn’t have done any of this alone….I’d probably still be lost in the woods.” Volkner said, as he started to head back to the farm.
“Oh!..um…Volkner?” Astrid said, chasing after him.
“Yeah?”
“Could you, uh, tell amaranth hi for me?”
“All right, lover boy lets go!” Shadow said, grabbing Astrid by the scruff of his neck and dragging him away.
“hehe….I’m gonna miss those guys…” Volkner said, continuing back again.
