Welp, somebody had to take the fall for Earnhardt and the #88 running like a mule in the Kentucky Derby this year. Pink slip him, go get someone better. I don't think Eury Sr is a legitimate option but there are plenty of other crew chiefs out there who could be.
However, now Junior has no excuse if he runs bad. If he keeps running poorly it will be directly on him and his ability to race. Sadly, it is possible the late career issue of "Staying too long at the dance" is setting in early for the once Busch Series Champion and Daytona 500 winner. Junior has no trouble getting sponsorship and he can race as long as he wants but it would be a shame to see him just putz around for 8 years with no real chance of winning like D.W. and Richard Petty did at the end of their careers.

If Eury Jr. is getting knocked off the pit box than I have to say it's about friggin' time. Other than Todd Berrier I've never seen any crew chief as good at making a car worst as the race goes on than Eury Jr. The only reason Dale Jr. defened him and held on to him all this time is to serve as a meat shield.....he knows Juinor Nation will blame his struggles and mistakes on Eury Jr. Tony Eury Sr. is the first choice that comes to everyone's minds, but he and Dale Jr. had quit communicating after the Homestead Race of '04(his car ran like crap at that race too)and DEI ended up switching the entire crew for the #8 and the #15 because of it(look how good that worked out )besides Eury Sr. is working in Nationwide with Brad Keselowski so I don't see him coming back to Cup.

According to Jayski, the big crew chiefs currently available are Chris Carrier, James Ince, Brad Parrott and Rick Viers.
If I had a choice of one of those I'd take one of Todd Parrott (although I think he has a non-crew chief position somewhere) or Ince (he knows how to win, he did so with Johnny Benson at Rockingham in 2002)
Of anyone not currently employed and not on that list I'd go get Peter Sospenzo if I could. He's one of the few crew chiefs to get a win out of Hendrick's #25/#88 team, he got one with Joe Nemechek in 2003 at Richmond. He's also willing to bend the rules to win just like Chad Knaus, he got busted with a fuel additive after a win with Mayfield at California in 2000.

That's just who I'd get of guys I think are available. Sospenzo might be in like a car chief or team manager position with somebody. I don't know, he fell off the radar a little.
No guantees it would work either, just look at how Junior has had meltdowns with crew chiefs in the past like what led Eury Sr to leave him.
My real bet is his new crew chief will be an unknown but skilled mechanic from within the Hendrick organization or JR Motorsports. Perhaps his Busch crew chief Brian Campe although the #5 GoDaddy Chevy ain't exactly doing well either.

The decision has come down and Eury got his walking papers.
Jr's new crew chief is Brian Whitesell, who you may remember as the man who replaced Ray Everham as Jeff Gordon's crew chief in late 1999. He won a few races a top the box for Jeff, including their first two together although they were with cars step up by Ray.
Whitesell's a good guy, although it looks temporary I'd say that's a good choice.

Starting at Pocono, Lance McGrew will take over as Jr's crew cheif. McGrew has multiple wins with multiple drivers in multiple series with Hendrick Motorsports. Notably, he was Vickers' crew chief when he won at Talladega.

Remember, his run with Whitesell this week was a one-off. We'll see if Lance McGrew can right the #88 Chevy.
