Very sad. NHRA driver Scott Kalitta has been died after an on-track racing accident.
While trying to qualify for this weekend's NHRA Funny Car race, Kalitta's car burst into flames and shot off the end of the track at nearly full-speed (about 300 MPH). Kalitta was taken to a local hospital but died from his injuries shortly after arrival.
Kalitta was the 1994 and 1995 NHRA champion for the series premier Top Fuel Dragsters. He had 18 career victories, 17 in Top Fuel and 1 in Funny Cars (one of the very few to ever win in both).
This is the dark side of auto racing. Everytime a racer gets behind the wheel, he knows it could be the last thing he ever does. Racing is dangerous, it always has been and always will be. No one likes seeing things like this but it is a sad reality of the sport.
On behalf of myself and the entire 101 Dalmatians message board, we send the Kalitta family our deepest condolences.
