This is a new topic I wanted to try out. Here, whenever I see a new CGI animated film, I will give my personal opinion on it. Just to let you know, when I see a CGI animated film, I rate it on four aspects: story, characters, animation, and jokes. According to my knowledge, in order for a CGI animated movie to be good, story needs to have the primary focus, the next one down would be the characters, then the animation, and then finally, the jokes.
Anyway, this is one that I just saw yesterday, and here's my input on it:
The Dolphin (2009)
Story: A
I felt the film had a very strong story, and it taught a very good moral. The "follow your dreams" theme never seems to grow stale. It's a shame that not many people know about this film being that it was a foreign film.
Characters: B-
The characters are above average. The main character, Daniel, is very kind, noble and lovable. The angels who get sent to him to send him messages are very gentle with him. His little squid sidekick is a little annoying. Daniel's dolphin kin, I didn't like at all, because they were a**holes. There were some other characters who seemed like a**holes too such as Lusious the Barracuda and the evil octopus. However, the female dolphin, Leena, I wish she had more screentime. She isn't introduced until like the last 15 minutes of the movie, and she barely ever spends any time with Daniel, yet the summary of the movie on the DVD case says that she's one of the main characters. The younger characters were annoying, especially since they reminded me too much of "Finding Nemo".
Animation: D
The animation is terrible. Compared to Disney, Pixar, and even Dreamworks standards, it looks like the animators just did a half-ass job on it. These would have been good for video game graphics, but not for movie graphics.
Jokes: B
Most of the jokes in the movie are actually based around the nature of sea animals, which I think works cleverly in this film. However, the comedic jokes are for the most part annoying. You can easily tell when a joke is supposed to be slapstick or not, and it doesn't matter if it's verbal or physical, it's still slapstick. Not to mention, there are fart jokes in this movie too! At least the jokes aren't constantly being shoved into your face all the time, and when it comes to focus the story definately gets the upper-hand on this movie.
So overall, that's my thoughts on The Dolphin. I'll probably use this topic to do this for other CGI films that I've seen in the past, but maybe later.
