Work in Progress
Puppies of the Caribbean
By Oddy
Drake sits in the Captain’s Cabin going over a map. Reaching to his side, he grabs a rum bottle and goes for a drink. The bottle is empty so only a drop falls onto his tongue. “Why is the rum always gone? All I ever wanted was a drink…” Grabbing a rusted ring of keys Drake grabs his ýhat and walks out of the cabin.
On deck, Oddy is at the helm and is keeping an eye on the horizon. The rest of the crew scurries about trying to look busy while Captain Drake Van Hellsing is on deck as well. But he has no interest in them, it is after dark and he has rum on his mind. He makes his way to the hatch and descends into the belly of the ship, it’s hull swaying side to side in the calm sea. After going down a couple levels, Drake unlocks a door with one of the keys and enters the storeroom. “Now… Where is that rum?” he says as he hangs the keys on a nail and grabs a lantern.
“Captain…” says a voice from the dark.
“Who’s there?” Drake asks as he looks into the darkened room. Suddenly a face appears before him and he stumbles back from surprise. “D**n it Vincent… I told you not to do that!”
“Sorry Drake… Couldn’t resist.” said Vincent as he extends a paw to the fallen Captain. A gold medallion dangles from his neck, and a rum bottle rests in his other paw. “Out for a late night drink I see…”
“Of course… But why are you down here? And how’d you open that door, eh? I thought I was the only one with a key?”
“Keys aren’t the only ways to open locks… Captain.” Vincent gave Drake a look, and then took a swig from the rum bottle. “Here ya are Captain…” he said as he handed the bottle over. Eager for his long awaited drink, Drake tilts the bottle back, but gets nothing.
“Why’s the rum gone?”
“Sorry… You aren’t the only one in need of a drink now are ya?”
“But why’s the rum gone?”
“There’s another bottle towards the back… Good night Captain, I’m turning in.”
“In the back… Back there? In the dark?”
“That’s why you have a lantern Captain…” Vincent rolled his eyes and made for the door slowly. “Oh and just remember, we never did find that monkey…” Vincent laughed loudly as he closed the door. His footfalls could be heard on the deck above, but soon all was silent.
“Right…” Drake held the lantern aloft as he slowly crept into the darkness of the room, the only guide was the small glint of what looked to be a rum bottle. “That’s it… Just you and ol’ Drake now eh?” Reaching for the glimmer, something bit his paw. Quickly drawing his pistol, he fired at the unseen attacker.
“You know that doesn’t do any good…” said Vincent’s voice from above.
“It does for me…” Drake reached for the bottle and found he had blasted it instead of the monkey. “All hands on deck! All hands on deck!’ he shouted as he quickly ran out of the room and back towards topside. “Oddy! Set course to Tortuga!! We’re outta rum… Again.”
“Aye, Aye Captain!” Oddy said as he turned the ship’s wheel to port. “We’re not too far off Captain. Should be there in an hour…”
“Captain…” Drake turned to face the voice. Drake was now face to face with Lucky.
“What is it?”
“You do know that we’re after shiny things right?
“Rum bottles are shiny Lucky… And no pirate ship is complete without a good stock of rum, eh? I mean, rum is what keeps this ship going, savvy?”
“Just asking Captain… This is the third trip to Tortuga in a week. Maybe you should get more rum this time?”
“I will take your excellent recommendation into account once we reach said location. Now if you will excuse me… I will be in my cabin.”
“Aye Captain…” said Lucky as he went back to his duties. “Hope you know what you’re doing is all.”
“Have a little faith Lucky… We can’t all be brave seadogs like you…” said Vincent as he gave a evil laugh.
“And we aren’t all cursed undead like you… If it weren’t for the fact that Isla de Muerta was reclaimed in that hurricane, you wouldn’t still have that blasted coin…”
“Just a little souvenir… Something to make sure I’m here to torment you forever…” said Vincent as he flashed the Aztec gold in front of Lucky. His body looking dead and decayed as the moon shone overhead. “But then of course, I guess there was no point to me finishing that rum bottle then… No effect on the cursed.” Vincent said as he walked over to the helm.
“Clear night by the looks of you Vince…” Oddy remarked as the cursed pup made his approach.
“That it is… Too bad really, Rose’ll be disappointed with me when I get back. She was expecting I’d be curse free by the time we make our way home again.”
“We’ll find a way. Mind taking over for a while, I wanna talk to the Captain.”
“No prob…” Vincent wrapped his skeletal paws around the ebon black helm and looked off to the distance.
“That looks familiar… Ah well.” Oddy made his way down to the door of Drake’s cabin. “Captain… May I speak to you for a moment?” he said while knocking.
“Come on in mate.” Oddy entered the cabin and closed the door again. “Of all the pirates I know, you’re the only one with any manners and common decency. Ever think you’re in the wrong profession?”
“No sir Drake…”
“Captain… Drake.”
“Sorry Captain. We’ve been friends a while, you and I. When you told me you had this ship and were planning on going pirating, I thought you were daft. But we’ve been out here for a while and we’ve been doing well so far. Though can I make one small suggestion Captain?”
“Aye? What’d that be?”
“Do you figure we can get with the times a little? Most of the ships we want to plunder can run laps around us. It’s 2007 Drake… Can’t we at least commandeer a better ship?”
“And give up the Pearl? Never…”
“Just a thought Captain… But anyways, on that note. Permission to leave ship when we reach Tortuga.”
“Denied… You’re the only dog on board that Vincent’ll listen to, and I don’t really trust him that much.”
“If I take him with me?”
“Agreed… Bon Voyage!”
