As I've done with Jocelyn before, this is a fan fic I decided to make on how/what happened around the time Katrina ended up on Dearly Farm. (For those of you who don't know, Erik, [the phantom from "Phantom of the Opera" is rather, a good character, not a bad one, hence "'Phantom of the' Farm".) Enjoy:).
-
One day, a young, female Dalmatian was walking about the city of Gruteley keeping the right side of her head tilted a bit downward, towards the ground. The reason this female Dal walked in such a manner, was because just about the fur on the right side of her face, around the eye, was burned off in an incident involving a burning building that she and her family were fortunately able to escape from. The right side of her face was now dark red, like dried blood. Her and her family being stray, her parents were adopted by a family of humans, but because of this physical feature, she was left, alone. Her name was Katrina.
"First, the side of my face is burned off, and now, my parents, and only my parents, were adopted by humans." Katrina sadly thought as she walked, keeping the red side down, so the nearby humans wouldn't see it. "Now, I'm alone in this big city, and soon, Winter will come. I don't know if I could possibly handle living life much, anymore. "
Then, she accidentally gently bumped into the wall of a nearby store. The contact did send her back a bit. When she stopped, on her rear, she covered the right side of her face with her fore right paw, as she knew that her face was now even, allowing the burn to be seen more easily.
Katrina looked up to examine what store she bumped into. She noticed that it was a store that was selling Halloween-related products, including masks, ones that covered the whole face, and half of the face.
Katrina then thought, "Maybe, there might be something in there that will cover my face, or my burn at least." She then got up on all fours, and walked into the store, keeping the right side of her head at a bit of a downward angle.
Katrina searched the aisles of the Halloween store for several minutes, looking for just the right mask, until she came across two, that were the exact same shape, but different colors. They were both shaped like the mask in "Phantom of the Opera", but one was white, while the other was black.
"Hmm. They're both practically the colors of my usual fur." Katrina thought, as she glanced between the two masks. "However, perhaps the white one might blend in more than the black one." She then took the white, half-face mask, and put it on her face. It was a perfect fit, and it covered the whole burn.
"Yay. Now, I have a covering for my burn." Katrina happily thought, as she began to smile. She then walked out of the store with the mask on, and thankfully, was not stopped by a single human employee.
Once outside, Katrina walked to the abandoned building she currently took shelter in, with her head at an even angle. Along the way, she decided to stop by a nearby hot dog vendor. The guy running the vendor, who had a hot dog in his hand, saw her, and did notice the mask. He tilted his head a bit, curious about the mask.
"Now what is a mask doing on your face, little dog, when it isn't even Halloween yet?" he wondered. He bent down towards Katrina, and, with his free hand, slowly lifted the mask up from her face.
When he lifted the mask up, he saw the rest of Katrina's face, red as dry blood. When he saw this, his eyes went wide, and he went, "Geez, that is ugly." he stated, as he frantically put the mask back on. "Get out of here, you!"
However, Katrina was hungry, as her stomach growled and she began to whimper a bit, eyeing the hot dog.
The hot dog vendor noticed her gazing at the hot dog in his other hand. He looked at the hot dog, then towards Katrina, and told her, "Okay. You can have the hot dog. But get out of here. Your ugly face around here is bad for business." He then gave Katrina the hot dog. Once she had the hot dog in her jaws, Katrina ran off, away from the vendor, to the abandoned building she currently took shelter in.
Once she got to her home, Katrina laid down in a warm section of the barn, and began to eat the hot dog the man gave to her. As she ate, Katrina began to think about what the hot dog vendor said and did. "Clearly, even wearing a mask isn't enough to prevent my burn from being seen by humans." she thought. "Maybe if I leave the city, I won't be bothered as much about this burn of mine." She then finished her hot dog, and an hour later, fell asleep, with her mask on
The next day, at about 11am, Katrina got up, left the abandoned building, and began her journey to someplace where she won't be bothered about her burn or mask.
After around 30 minutes of walking away from Gruteley, Katrina started to get hungry again. "I should've eaten something before leaving." Katrina thought. "However, another human probably would've seen my mask and burn."
Within a few minutes, Katrina came across a farm, known as Dearly Farm. "Perhaps I can get some food there on that farm." Katrina thought. "Hopefully, the animals and humans won't mind if I stay for a short time, just to eat." She then stepped paw onto the property.
As she entered, Katrina noticed that this farm had a rather large number of canines, most of which were Dalmatians. She saw many different Dalmatians, almost like her, but none of them had a mask on, or a burn mark.
"M-maybe this wasn't such a good idea. " Katrina thought, as she noticed all the Dalmatians about the farm.
However, just as she was about to turn around and leave, she heard a human, no doubt a female adult, call out, "Yoo hoo! Come and get it! "
As the female human stated this, Katrina's stomach growled again. "Ohh. I might as well eat something, before I leave." Katrina then ran to where she heard the human call out, which lead her to a trough, filled with kibble. Just as she got there, she saw least 99 Dalmatian pups surround her, and gather around the trough. However, thankfully, they were focused on mainly eating the kibble, and didn't notice her one bit. She then shrugged her shoulders, and dipped her head into the trough, and began to eat the kibble. Thankfully, her mask didn't fall off once.
About 3 minutes later, all the kibble in the trough was devoured by Katrina and the surrounding pups, who scattered once they were done eating.
Katrina was planning on leaving, but then thought, "I don't exactly know where I could go, if I leave. Also, there are at least 99 animals here. Maybe some of them won't mind the mask." She then began walking about the farm.
As she walked about the farm, Katrina entered the barn, and within seconds, bumped into a male, Dalmatian pup with dark red eyes, and a spot around his right eye that was shaped like a drop of a liquid, who was reading a book just as she bumped into him. This Dal's name was Vladimir or Vlad.
The somewhat sudden contact caused Vlad to fall onto his side, but, seeing as how there was hay all over the barn's floor, it didn't hurt much. However, he was a bit irritated at having been interrupted in his reading. So, he got up on all fours, and looked right at the Dal who knocked him over. He was about to interrogate her as to why she did that, with a bit of a mean tone, but when he saw the mask, and noticed that she seemed a bit shy or nervous, he decided to soften it a bit.
"Excuse me, dear, but why did you bump into me?" Vlad asked.
"I'm s-sorry, sir. I didn't m-mean to." Katrina nervously replied.
"It's okay, dear. It's okay. I forgive you." Vlad calmly stated. "I suppose that you are new here?" Katrina just nodded in response. "What, may I ask, is your name, dear?"
"K...Katrina." Katrina answered.
"It's nice to meet you, dear Katrina. My name is Vladimir, but my friends often call me Vlad for short." Vladimir answered.
"It's n-nice to meet you too, V-Vlad." Katrina nervously said.
"Mind if I ask, what is that mask for?" Vlad kindly questioned.
"I...I don't think you want to know." Katrina told him.
"It's okay, dear. You can tell me." Vladimir responded.
"I...I'd actually have to take off the mask to show you the reason. And I'd rather not take it off." Katrina stated.
"I'm sure whatever it is, couldn't possibly be that bad." Vladimir assured her.
Katrina noticed that this Vlad was persistent in wanting to see what the mask was for. So, she turned her head, so a majority of the right side of her face could be seen by Vlad, and slowly removed her mask.
As Katrina removed her mask, Vladimir then caught sight of an area around her right eye that was dark red, like dry blood. He vaguely saw one bit of fur. However, he did not go wide-eyed, turn around, or exclaim anything. He just stood there, looking at it for a few seconds, then looking back into Katrina's eyes with a calm expression.
"Y...You're not doing anything dramatic." Katrina noted, as she looked at Vlad, with the right side of her face towards him.
"I've seen, and imagined far worse deformities than that, my dear." Vladimir calmly told her. "Besides, it's really what's on the inside of a figure that matters most. And clearly, you are just as kind, gentle, and innocent, as a hummingbird or mockingbird."
"You....You really mean all that?" Katrina asked, as she turned her head a bit, so Vlad could see as much of the right side of her face, as he could the left.
"Absolutely, my dear." Vlad kindly replied. "I mean every word of it. "
"Hehe Th....Thanks, Vlad. " Katrina responded, as she blushed and smiled a bit.
"Come here, dear." Vladimir insisted, as he sat up on his rear, and leaned against a wall of the barn. "Why don't you just lay here next to me, as I read my book, and relax? "
"Hehe Okay, Vlad. " Katrina stated as she walked over next to Vlad, and laid down on the soft hay right next to him.
As soon as he figured that Katrina was comfy next to him, Vladimir resumed calmly reading his book, which apparently was "Phantom of the Opera", but now, at a volume that only he and Katrina could hear.
As Vladimir read "Phantom of the Opera", indirectly to Katrina, Katrina occasionally looked from the book's text and pages, and turned her gaze up towards Vlad's face, smiling. Vladimir did sometimes notice these looks, but just smiled in response and kept on reading.
Katrina was happy to have finally found someone, after being left alone by the humans who adopted only her parents, who didn't mind neither her mask, nor her red mark on the right side of her face. She was so touched by what Vlad had said to her after she revealed the mark, that she actually acquired a bit of a crush on him. He was just so kind to her, and he was the first Dalmatian he made contact with on the farm. So, she decided to stay on Dearly Farm, for this, long as at least Vlad was there, was her new home.

(P.S. If you don't get why I made Vlad say, "as kind, gentle and innocent as a hummingbird or mockingbird." It's bcuz in this one book I read in school, (it's a bit of historical fiction), the author put down the belief or assumption that it was/is a sin to kill a mockingbird, for just about all they do is sing their lovely songs. Therefore, innocent.)
