This is speaking in general, not speaking of any specific version.
The other reindeer didn't really like Rudolph after he got the sleigh through the fog. They just appreciated an underdog story and acted like they liked him all along, like they weren't the ones who outcast him all his life in the first place. They only changed their minds about him because he'd proved himself useful.

I think the story is suppose to be like, Rudolf was shunned by the others because he was different, since a nose that glows isn't really the most normal of things, is it? ^^;
However, when Rudolf proved his use and how his difference isn't such a bad thing, made them realise "You know, Rudolf? You're alright!" It's not they pretend they didn't shun him, it's that they realised that they were wrong for picking on Rudolf and try to make amends.
Besides, anyone who helps Santa in his hour of need must be a pretty good fellow, eh? ;3

Hm. My point is that they only appreciated him after they saw he was useful instead of just being nice to him in the first place because that's the decent thing to do. Well, I saw someone wrote the Japanese version translated to English tonight:
Rudolph had a shiny nose no one liked him he cried every night then one Christmas it was dark Santa decided Rudolph’s nose was convenient Rudolph was useful
