Heh. Don't really have an explination for this. Felt the need to write. Some of it's personal, some of it's just for comedy...but whatever.
Aria was brooding. Well, she always seemed to be a brooding, angsty, moody little pup, but at the moment it was all genuine. Her paws kept close to her body as she sat at the edge of hiccup hole, her tail wasn’t even visible, hidden between her legs and curled up into her body. Her body stance hinted at a pup crying into the water, though no teardrops fell. She wouldn’t allow it. Instead, the female just glared into the smooth surface of the beloved swimming hole.
It often played the part of her own personal mirror, considering that Jewel and Diva usually had the others stashed away for their own personal primping. That, and it was slightly off and away from the barn; a less likely chance that someone might catch her. With the way she was staring at herself in disgust, it was no wonder why she’d like to keep the moment private.
It wasn’t too often the femme questioned her appearance, at least, not openly. Reaching up with a paw, she pushed at her plump cheek almost squashing it. Letting it fall, she watched the flesh bounce and mold back into it’s natural roundness. Standing up so that her entire body was visible in the reflection, sans feet, she turned and swaggered a bit. A moment later, she perked her ears before looking this way and that, checking to see if anyone was nearby.
Sure that there wasn’t a soul near, or heading towards the Hiccup Hole, she turned back to her reflection. Turning slightly, her shoulder lifted to dimple the flesh of her cheek, eyes half-lidded in a smoldering ‘come hither’ look. Her lower lip was glossy and pouted; she attempted to mimic what she thought was a feminine and alluring pose.
Glancing at herself in the reflection, she recoiled with disgust and swiped her paw through the water, splashing the image of herself and causing it to distort with endless ripples. “Who m’I kiddin’? I got nothin’.” She stood and turned away from the still-rippling pond water and headed towards… well, she really didn’t have anywhere to go. She couldn’t go back to the barn, not after what had just gone down. There was the option of the Toolshed, but she really didn’t want to have to deal with Tac.
Yes, there were times when she just didn’t feel like going along with his idiotic plans- no… she was speaking out of anger. That was exactly why the pup didn’t want to be near anyone; her temper and emotions were too stirred up. Instead, she simply decided to walk, tail limp and lifeless, eyes on the ground. Even then, her mind continued to go back on what had occurred to put her in such a mood.
~
She didn’t know why she had agreed to such an idiotic game- wait, yes she did. Aria had been conned by Dipstick’s huge eyes and quivering lower lip. What she hadn’t known, was that agreeing to play meant it was a team sport. Freeze tag. And it seemed quite a few pups had decided to play.
Unfortunately they were all male.
“Uuuh, I’ll take… Dipstick!” Came Patch’s voice, pointing at the aforementioned pup. With a happy wag of his tail, he pranced foreword and sat among the mass of puppies that would be his team-mates.
That left only Whizzer, and Aria left to choose. Her ears lowering in annoyance, she had a look on her face which clearly expressed how much she wanted to simply walk off. The other team leader was Lucky, naturally, and she didn’t know which was worse; being on his side, or being chosen last. Then again, not like she really cared either way.
Before the egotistical pup could decide, however, Two-Tone and Cadpig arrived. Noticing that a game was about to go on, they both perked up and approached with hopeful faces.
”Hey Lucky! What’re you boys up to?” Two-Tone asked with a few bats of her eyes, causing her beau to blush a bit and grin sheepishly.
”Aw, nothin’. We were just about to play a game of Freeze Tag.”
Cadpig wagged her little tail, beaming up at him, “Ah yes, physical activity is just another tool in aiding one’s Karma. …Can we play?” She bounced up and down, her paws practically heel-to-heel as she did.
Lucky would’ve answered, had Patch not stuck his nose between them, using his large body to nudge the opposing team leader aside. “Sorry gals, no girls allowed.”
Aria had been staring at her paws, wondering if maybe she should sharpen the constantly-exposed talons into razor tips. But when she heard that, her ears perked and she gave a little grunt, “Oi! Wait! I’ve been standin’ here for ten minutes, and this game is only for boys? What the HECK am I doin’ here?”
Patch glanced over at her, bewildered. “What? Did you want to have girls play too?”
”…”
Half of the crowd fell silent; the other half looked just as confused as Patch. Cadpig decided to speak up, considering the confused although murderous look that Aria held.
“Um.. I’m sure you guys were just pumped up about your game and all, but… Aria is… Well, a girl.” She chuckled and patted Patch’s arm.
Whizzer looked over at her, and blinked, “What? No way!”
Aria glared at him, though not before stepping back a few inches because sure enough; as soon as she had looked at him, he wet the grass beneath him. “Yes. I’mma GIRL.”
Lucky, who hadn’t really known that it was a Boys-Only game, gave a chuckle, “Yeah. She’s not the most…uh, feminine girl around, but Aria –is- a girl.” He turned around, only to come face to face with an angry pup.
”Not feminine? What? You mean if I didn’t say I was a girl, nobody’d be able to tell!?” She fumed in his face, growling and bristling like the four-pawed devil himself. Her paws had curled into the ground, fighting the urge to clock him right in the kisser.
Glancing away, the lucky dog wasn’t feeling very fortunate at the moment, looking to the two girls for help, a pleading look on his face.
Two-tone decided to speak up, “Well, you don’t really show an interest in clothes. Or boys. Or shopping… or, um, taking care of your figure.”
Like she had room to talk; but that wasn’t to say she didn’t try to stay fit and cute like the other girl dogs.
Dipstick blinked, looking around and somehow, he felt the intensity in the air. At least enough to question what the heck was going on.“Hey…guys… Aria’s a pretty girl. Leave ‘er alone?”
Patch snorted, “Dipstick, I –told- you to get another guy to play with us! If you knew she was a girl, then how come you made her play anyway?”
”Uh… I fergot?” Was the dim pup’s reply.
Aria, at this point, was red in the face. Her cheeks were puffed out even more than usual, her eyes narrowed and glimmering like little mismatched beads of hate. Though, as he looked into them, he could see embarrassment shining within them as well. She didn’t hit him, she just turned around and began to storm off. And that was when she went to go evaluate herself at the hiccup hole. Nobody dared to follow her, and there was nothing they could say.
She wasn’t some gorgeous sleek thing like a spotless puppy.
She wasn’t athletic, or had any fancy spots, and a cute name.
She wasn’t a trim and slim little goody-girl.
And apparently, everyone seemed to forget that she even WAS part of the female gender.
~
Her thoughts stopped when she realized she was being spoken too. There was a moment, until she looked down, and came face to face with crimson eyes. “Uh..?”
”Yeah! You! Marshmallow! Whaddaya t’ink you’re doing on my field!?” The little pug, who went by the same name, bellowed into her face. Her ears flapped backwards from the force, her eye closing though one bugged out in shock.
”S-sorry, uh, Lt. Pug. Didn’t mean t’wander onto yer…field.” She looked around, realizing that if most of the males were playing Freeze Tag, then there was no one for him to boss around. Her eyes caught sight of a strong form galloping towards them, her head craning back to look up at the slightly taller pup. Aria was a runt, after all.
Tripod, chest out, three legs strong and steady looked at his higher ranking officer, and then to the strange female. He had only seen her around once or twice before, she was a slacker; the type to avoid the Bark Brigade. Still, he didn’t break rank and let out a sharp bark, “Sir, should I escort this girl off of our field, sir?” He quoted his sentence with signs of respect.
Aria was about to snarl, when she realized… he had called her a girl. Blinking in surprise, she wasn’t even listening to Pug mispronounce her name, and confirm Tripod’s question. All she could feel was the nudge of a muscled leg on her shoulder, her own short limbs slowly walking along. Though her face had been red with anger before, her cheeks were now tinted with a light blush. “You.. Uh, you like the Bark Brigade?”
Tripod smirked, “Affirmative.” He lowered his head, once they were far enough from Lt. Pug, giving her shoulder another nudge. “I’m afraid he’s a bit tense today, don’t take anything he says personally. The Brigade is a choice, not mandatory.” Once they reached the line which signified the field, he gave her a curt nod.
Aria could only stare up at him, her eyes lowered faintly as she sighed, “Uh…yeah. I’ll… Um, maybe I’ll join.” She never stuttered like that before; what was wrong with her?
The athletic pup nodded, before turning and beginning to run back to his superior officer. “That might be best. Perhaps we could whip you into shape!”
Those words had stung a bit, and it seemed to snap her out of her daze, the pudgy pup shaking her head. “Man… Uh… What was I doin’?” Wrinkling her nose, she grunted, “Eh, might as well see Tac.”
It seemed she hardly felt bad about what had occurred earlier. Aria genuinely felt better.
