Earlier this year, I started a game show rp called Shafted, and the only person who chose to take part in it was Raine. The endgame in that rp didn't go exactly what I thought it would, despite me clearly explaining how it works in the discussion thread and in the rp itself. I'm thinking about starting a pm rp of this show with someone else, but until then, I'll be posting a fanfic of it. This fanfic will be split into three parts. Here's part one.
***
In a game show set with colors and lightings similar to those on The Weakest Link, an adult male Dalmatian in a black suit stands between two podiums, each with a touch screen on it. The Dalmatian has solid, black ears, a thick, brown mustache, and a muscular build.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," he said, facing the camera. "Tonight, we have six contestants, and they will be going through a test of greed, knowledge, and trust. However, only two of them will make it over here to the endgame, and this is where they will each make an individual decision on what to do with tonight's cash prize. Will they share or shaft? We're about to find out tonight on Shafted."
The audience applauded as the Dalmatian walked across the set to his podium, and the theme music played as the logo for the show, Shafted appeared. Once the Dalmatian is standing behind his podium, the logo is removed, and the audience ceased their applause.
"Thank you," said the Dalmatian. "Good evening, and welcome to Shafted. I'm Pasquale Fettuccine, and a whole lot of money can be won tonight if our two final contestants can trust each other and make the right decisions. Let's meet tonight's six contestants."
Pasquale then faced the contestant area, where six contestants are each standing behind their podium. The contestants from Pasquale's left to his right are Lucky, Cadpig, Rolly, Spot, Two-Tone, and Tripod. This is now where the contestants introduce themselves.
"Hi," said Lucky, "I'm Lucky, and I play the electric guitar in a band. I'm here to win some money for my band and my family."
"My name is Cadpig," said Cadpig, "and I am a keyboard player and a nice, caring person. No matter what happens to me in this game, I'll go home happy."
"I'm Rolly," said Rolly. "I play the drums, and I like to eat a lot. My parents have put me on a strict diet because of how overweight I am, and since they're doing something good for me, I'll try doing something good for them in return by giving them all the money I might win tonight."
"Hello," said Spot, "my name is Spot. I play the bass, and I want to win some money for my Dalmatian friends, their family, and my own family, especially my mother, Cornelia."
"I'm Two-Tone," said Two-Tone. "I've been known for being greedy and not too trustworthy, but with help from my family and friends, I've turned myself around. And that's why I'm here, to prove that I have become a much better person."
"My name is Tripod," said Tripod. "I run on track, and I am top student in gym class. If I win any money tonight, I will donate it all to a charity for disabled children."
The audience applauded after Lucky, Cadpig, Rolly, Spot, Two-Tone, and Tripod all introduced themselves.
"Welcome to the game, contestants," Pasquale said to the contestants. "I must say, though, that the welcome will be too short here for one of you, because one of you will be out of the show before we can get to the first question round. I'm starting each of you off with $25,000."
The amount of $25,000 is displayed on the monitor at the front of each contestant's podium.
"This part of this game is a test of greed," Pasquale said to the contestants. "In an increment of $1,000, each of you must lock in how much money you would like out of $25,000 should that much money be offered to you. After each of you has locked in an amount, whoever locks in with the highest amount in the fastest time will be shafted off the show. Lock in your bids."
The contestant each locked in an amount of money out of the $25,000 that each of them were started out with. The amounts locked in were then displayed on the monitors on the contestants' podiums. Lucky has locked in with $10,000, Cadpig has locked in with $2,000, Rolly has locked in with $20,000, Spot has locked in with $5,000, Two-Tone has locked in with $15,000, and Tripod has locked in with $7,000. The lights flashed on Rolly.
"Rolly you've locked in with the highest amount," said Pasquale. "$20,000. That means you're the first one to leave us."
The audience let out an "Aawww" at this.
"That's all right with me," said Rolly. "I just thought that someone would bid higher than I did."
"I'm sorry, Rolly," said Pasquale. "You're off the show."
The show's logo then flashed, and Rolly was gone.
"So, we have gone through a test of greed," said Pasquale. "Now, we'll be going through a test of knowledge. There are three question rounds, each one with as many questions as there are remaining contestants. There are five of you left, so five questions will be asked in the first question round. Like before, we'll start each of you off with $25,000. I will read only the first part of a question, and in an increment of $1,000, each of you must lock in how much money you want to wager. Whoever locks in with the highest wager in the fastest time must answer the question after it has been read in its entirety. A right answer will add your wager to your total, while a wrong answer will deduct your wager from your total. At the end of each question round, the contestant in the lead will get to choose whom to shaft out of the game. Let's play Shafted."
A music cue was played while the lights on the set lit up in a specific symmetrical pattern.
"What type of plant...?" Pasquale read from a card as the same words appear for the home viewers. "What type of plant...? Lock in your wagers."
The contestants each locked in their wager. The monitors on their podiums show that Lucky has locked in with $4,000, Cadpig has locked in with $6,000, Spot has locked in with $11,000, Two-Tone has locked in with $7,000, and Tripod has locked in with $2,000. The lights flashed on Spot.
"Spot, you have locked in with $11,000," said Pasquale. "Your wager is the highest, so you'll answer this question."
The rest of the question appears for the home viewers as Pasquale reads the entire question from his card.
"What type of plant is a national symbol of England?" he asked.
"Poppy," said Spot.
"No, no, it's a rose! That takes you down to $14,000. Here's the next question."
The first part of the next question appears for the home viewers as Pasquale reads it aloud from his card.
"Which US President...?" he asked. "Which US President...? Lock in your wagers."
The contestants each locked in their wager. The monitors on their podiums show that Lucky has locked in with $18,000, Cadpig has locked in with $22,000, Spot has locked in with $13,000, Two-Tone has locked in with $15,000, and Tripod has locked in with $19,000. The lights flashed on Cadpig.
"Cadpig, your wager is the highest," said Pasquale. "You've wagered $22,000. You'll be the one to answer this question."
The rest of the question appears for the home viewers as Pasquale reads the entire question from his card.
"Which US President was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in 1963?" he asked.
"John F. Kennedy," said Cadpig.
"John F. Kennedy is correct. That takes your total to $47,000. Now comes the next question."
The first part of the next question appears for the home viewers as Pasquale reads it aloud from his card.
"Which branch of mathematics...?" he asked. "Which branch of mathematics...? Lock in your wagers."
The contestants each locked in their wager. The monitors on their podiums show that Lucky has locked in with $10,000, Cadpig has locked in with $30,000, Spot has locked in with $5,000, Two-Tone has locked in with $8,000, and Tripod has locked in with $21,000. The lights flashed on Cadpig again.
"It's you again, Cadpig," said Pasquale. "You have the highest wager, $30,000. You must answer this question."
The rest of the question appears for the home viewers as Pasquale reads the entire question from his card.
"Which branch of mathematics classically studies zeros of polynomial equations?" he asked.
"Geometry," said Cadpig.
"More. I need the whole thing."
"Algebraic geometry."
"You are correct. It is algebraic geometry. You are up to $77,000. On to the next question."
The first part of the next question appears for the home viewers as Pasquale reads it aloud from his card.
"The wingspan of which bird...?" he asked "The wingspan of which bird...? Lock in your wagers."
The contestants each locked in their wager. The monitors on their podiums show that Lucky has locked in with $7,000, Cadpig has locked in with $21,000, Spot has locked in with $12,000, Two-Tone has locked in with $14,000, and Tripod has locked in with $23,000. This time, the lights flashed on Tripod.
"And now, it's Tripod who has the highest wager," said Pasquale. "Your wager is $23,000, Tripod, so you'll be the one to answer this question."
The rest of the question appears for the home viewers as Pasquale reads the entire question from his card.
"The wingspan of which bird is the largest of any extant birds, reaching up to 12 feet?" he asked.
"Albatross," said Tripod.
"It is the albatross. You are right. Your total is $48,000. Now, to the last question in this round."
The first part of the next question appears for the home viewers as Pasquale reads it aloud from his card.
"Which federal holiday...?" he asked. "Which federal holiday...? Lock in your wagers."
The contestants each locked in their wager. The monitors on their podiums show that Lucky has locked in with $16,000, Cadpig has locked in with $11,000, Spot has locked in with $10,000, Two-Tone has locked in with $15,000, and Tripod has locked in with $13,000. Now, the lights flashed on Lucky.
"Lucky, you've wagered $16,000," said Pasquale. "Your wager is the highest, so it's you who will answer this question."
The rest of the question appears for the home viewers as Pasquale reads the entire question from his card.
"Which federal holiday...is also known as 'Decoration Day'?" he asked.
"Memorial Day," said Lucky.
"Yes, it's Memorial Day. That takes your total to $41,000. That was the last question in this round. Here's where we stand. Spot has $14,000, Two-Tone has $25,000, Lucky has $41,000, Tripod has $48,000, and Cadpig has $77,000. Right now, another person is about to leave with nothing. Cadpig, you're in the lead, so you're safe from being shafted off the show. As the leader at the end of this round, you will get to choose whom to shaft. I'll give you a moment to think about it, and then, I'll ask for a name."
A different music cue was played while the lights on the set lit up in a specific symmetrical pattern. This lasted for about ten seconds, after which the music ended and all the lights on the set lit up white at the same time.
"So, Cadpig," said Pasquale, "who is the next person to be shafted off the show?"
"Two-Tone," said Cadpig.
"Two-Tone? She hasn't even said a word throughout the round. Why did you choose Two-Tone?"
"Because at the start of the show, she said that she turned herself around after being greedy and not too trustworthy. I don't think she was being truthful when she said that."
Pasquale turned to Two-Tone.
"Two-Tone, Cadpig has chosen to shaft you," said Pasquale. "However, you have a chance to get her to change her mind and choose someone else to shaft. If you're persuasive enough, you'll successfully save yourself. I'll give you a moment to tell Cadpig why she should keep you in the game."
"Well, Cadpig," said Two-Tone, "I really was being honest when I said that I've turned myself around with help from my family and friends. So, if you could change your mind and shaft someone else, then I'll show you how less greedy and more trustworthy I've become."
"All right. So, now that Two-Tone has explained herself, Cadpig, you now have to make another decision. Are you going to stick to your original choice, or are you going to change your mind? If you choose to change your mind, then whoever you choose at that point will not get a chance to save themselves."
"Well, then," said Cadpig, "I'll give Two-Tone a chance to prove herself and change my mind."
"And who are you going to shaft off the show?"
"Spot."
The lights flashed on Spot.
"Spot, you're the next person to be shafted," said Pasquale.
The audience let out an "Aawww" at this.
"Cadpig should've stuck with her original choice and shaft Two-Tone," said Spot.
"I'm sorry, Spot," said Pasquale. "You're off the show."
The show's logo then flashed, and Spot was gone.
