Back when 101 Dalmatians was an active series, it was part of Disney's 1 Saturday Morning. I actually remember what their original lineup was every Saturday morning! If you'll take a look at it, maybe you'll see why the series flew under the radar and never really became a hit:
7:00 AM - 101 Dalmatians 7:30 AM - Doug 8:15 AM - Recess 9:00 AM - Pepper Ann 9:30 AM - The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show 10:30 AM - Jungle Cubs 11:00 AM - The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh 11:30 AM - Science Court
You see? It aired at such an ungodly time. Not many kids are going to get up that early on a Saturday morning!
I also remember, a few times, they had to knock an hour off the block on Saturday mornings for special shows. It was always "101 Dalmatians" and "Jungle Cubs" that would get pulled from the lineup, and then air at 11:00 and 11:30 the following Sunday. Sometimes, "Bugs and Tweety" would get pulled as well.

I remember when I was younger and the show was originally airing, I believe they had the show on as a Sataurday Morning Show. On ITV, They had a Disney Block called; Digit.
Although, I do recall they usually skipped over the Opening Titles and only showed the first couple of seconds of the Titles (I think the 'Cruella Devil' Riff part). I do remember one of the earliest episodes that I can recall was; "Lucky All Star". I always remember hearing Tri-Pod say to Lucky; "I couldn't have done it, without you."
I think I also remember seeing; "Film Fatale" too. With the twist of where the "Thunderbolt Movie" was also airing.
I was often up very early in the mornings though, but I do recall watching it with my Parents in Bed.
Any UK Pups remember, Digit?

Just coming across this thread. But yeah, I totally remember watching this show on One Saturday Morning! And yeah the joyous recall of hearing the theme of the One Saturday Morning intro and then listening to the beginning riff of the 101 Dalmatians Series intro. Good old times. Shall I mention, the "Illuminating Television" aspect? Also I didnt even know about the cutting off of the Cruella De Vil riff on the intro. And I don't really think the timing of the lineup had anything to do with the popularity, Belchic.

I too remember when 101 Dalmatians the series was on One Saturday Morning. I also remember seeing it on the Disney Afternoon during the weekdays too. But yeah that was a terrible timeslot to put the series in.
And I thought CN was notorious for putting their good shows on the earliest timeslots.

It was a bad slot if you were a night person, like me.
