Why oh WHY had her sister decided to venture down this wretched path?
Jewel glanced nervously over her shoulder. Down the dark and (to her) sinister street, the palace gleamed like a shining beacon, its multiple levels seeming to gleam with lusterous jewels. "I must find her as soon as possible and get out of this place." She muttered to herself, clutching the dark inconspicuous cape more closely around her shoulders with a paw. "Who knows what sort of ruffians hang around this part of town.." As unused to the streets as she was however, the princess failed to cover her head, a mistake that would cost her dearly. For on top of her head sat her simple but beautiful crown, cast of sterling silver and a pointed beacon to the roaming thieves in the area. Shadowy figures all around eyeballed the Princess as she made her way into a narrow darkened alleyway, ducking from sight as she cast a nervous glance over her shoulder once more before doing so.
"That the Princess?" Asked a shadow.
"Aye. What's she doing out here?" asked a second.
"Don't matter does it?" The shadow grinned. "What's important is dat weight of silver on her head. Crown's gotta be worth a million pounds."
"Yeah? How we gonna get it Boss? Won't she have us beheaded for even tryin' ta snatch it?"
"True, but she ain't gonna find out who we is. Listen closely..."
Oh these...these streets are simply dreadful! Jewel though as she picked her way carefully down the alleyway. The granite was wet and slippery in some places, and very cold on her delicate pawpads. The brick walls seemed to be washed with darkness and shadow, cut through an unnatural blue-ish light directly ahead. She simply wasn't used to it, living in such splendor. All about her, shadows seemed to take on a life of their own but every time she looked directly at them, they ceased to move or exist. It was making the Princess exceptionally nervous and setting her nerves on end. Looking all about wearily, she started and snapped around to look behind her at a small crashing sound and was just in time to see a shadow disappear behind a dumpster. Jewel stared at it fearfully, gulping.
"W..who's there?" There was no answer. Somewhere close by, a rat suddenly scurried by with a squeak and she gasped, whirling about to try to avoid it and watch it go past. Her ruby eyes trailed its course until it disappeared behind a dumpster, the same one she'd seen the shadow duck behind. Nervously she began to back away from it, unaware that two other shadows were looming behind her. Then suddenly, she was grabbed harshly about the shoulders and yanked to face the other direction. The first thing she saw was the barrel of a gun pointed directly at her. "Don't move Missy or I'll blow your freakin' head off."
Fighting an instinctive reaction, Jewel let her eyes wander up to take in the features of her attacker. He wore a ski mask so no facial features were visible, not even his ears. All there was to even tell her her attacker was a canine was the long thin snout poking through the mask, which covered his face down to his neck. There were cold brown eyes staring at her and a very small ring of light brown around each one.
Nearly frozen with fear, Jewel nervously licked her lips. "U-um... um.. I-I am P-Princess Jewel, of D-Dalmatiant-"
"We know who ya are." The thief cut her off impatiently. "Now give us the crown." A sound made her turn her head, in time to glimpse a second thief appearing out of the darkness. "I SAID DON'T MOVE!!" The first screamed and she immediately whipped around and raised her front paws as if she were being arrested, sick with fear. "I-I'll do whatever you want, just don't kill me!"
"Then give me the CROWN!" The first one yelled again, and shaking, hesitant, Jewel slowly reached above her head and retrieved the crown and slowly lowered it to shoulder level, wherein the thief sharply snatched it from her paws, and she watched him place it in the pocket of his pants which were the same black as his mask and shirt.
"P-please, sir, I bade you to let me go. I've given what you asked, now if you'd kindly-"
"I don't think so sister." The thief said coyly. "I think we outta maybe take YOU as a hostage as well. Grab her Pete."
"N-No!!" Jewel yelped feebly as the thief's accomplice grabbed her from behind, holding her front legs behind her back so all she could do was struggle helplessly in his grasp. Her cape slid off her shoulders and heaped around her captor's arms, revealing the full length of her spotted body as well as her namesake spots. "P-please, unhand me you horrid ruffian!! I'll-"
"SHUT UP!" The scream of the first thief made her head snap up yet again and she saw he was still pointing the gun at her held in his right paw. Under his mask, the second thief grinned as well. "You ain't in any position to be makin' no threats, Your Highness. You either come with us, or we'll--OOF!!" Suddenly another figure came flying out of the shadows, striking the first thief in the back of the head and knocking him to the ground.
Jewel gasped, taking in the form of her alleged hero, and the second thief drew back uneasily, no longer so confident without his partner holding the gun. The dalmatian who stood panting over the unconscious body of the thief had two black scruffy ears, large ruby red eyes like her own and a small ring over his left eye. Inbetween his eyes was a curious assortment of spots that looked at first glance like a crude tree. She thought later that it was more like a wishbone.
Pink tongue hanging out of his mouth, the scruffy young dalmatian looked steadily in the eyes of the second thief. "Put. The Princess. Down."
Jewel craned her neck to try to look into the face of her captor, but could not see his eyes. She COULD however feel the slackening in his grip. He was weakening, afraid of this new menace who had thrown their whole plan into chaos. "L-listen. Buddy. If ya wanna strike a deal, we can give ya somethin'. My buddy's got a crown there worth millions. We can split it with ya."
"I'm not interested in ill-gotten gains." The young male dal returned, still betraying no sign of fear besides his heavy breathing, and Jewel looked at him with the first twinkle of admiration in her crimson orbs. "I want you to let her go, right now." Jewel felt the thief further slacken, and drawn back as the newcomer advanced a step toward him.
"Look.. buddy. I don't want no trouble from ya. Thieves gotta make a livin' too, ya know."
"There's better ways." His voice was still even. He sounded not the least bit afraid, and no sparkle of fear was in his eyes. Jewel saw it, and admired it further. The thief saw it too and took a step back, unnerved by this fearless youngster. "Now I'll ask you one more time. Put. The Princess. Down." The fearlessness came back into the thief's eyes now, for he saw his partner looming to his feet behind the stranger. He had the gun in his paw and a finger on the trigger. Just a few more seconds.
"LOOK OUT!!" Jewel screamed before the thief had time to clap a paw over her mouth and the stranger ducked just as a great thunder of fire went off in a burst of light. The young male dalmatian thrust his front arm back, pushing the equivalent of an elbow into the first thief's stomach and bowling him over with sudden pain, kicking out blindly and just managing to kick the gun out of his hand and into the shadows where it was lost.
As the first thief tried to regain his bearings, the stranger looked on in absolute horror, so certain the Princess was dead. Both thief and royalty were motionless for scant moments. And then the second thief slumped forward, his grip loosening forever. Finding her footing, Jewel moved forward and let the body of her captor fall behind her, dead before he hit the ground.
A few sharp huffs of breath escaped her as she looked with real admiration into the eyes of her savior, who drew close to her. "Are you all right?"
"Yes I'm fine I just...you saved my life!!" The stranger placed both paws on her shoulders, a gentle look gracing his features. "How could I let them kidnap the princess." For a long moment street dog and royalty looked deeply into each other's identical ruby red gaze, entranced. And then hastily the Princess broke her gaze and backed away, coughing daintily, and the street dog backed off as well. An awkward blush graced Jewel's cheeks and for a moment she tried in vain to regain her bearings, and so did the stranger.
"Oh, where are my manners." He stood back and took a humble bow that almost made his wet black nose touch the floor. "My Lady." Jewel blushed harder at his chivalry. "My...my man...I-I mean, um..." She coughed again daintily into a paw. "M-my dear, sweet gentleman. I am Princess Jewel of Dalmatian Town. I am...so pleased to meet you." She again met his gaze and he saw the flicker of admiration and...maybe it was his imagination but, perhaps something a little bit more.
"As I you, dear Lady." He cleared his throat abruptly. "Your Highness."
"P-please, call me Jewel." She stuttered a little awkwardly. The stranger bowed his head politely. "As you wish."
"M..may I ask you your name, good sir?"
"Lucky." She looked at him again with that admiring, fond look. The look of a girl who is fast falling in love.
"Lucky...I would say it is a...most proper name."
"So I've been told." There was a trace of humor in his voice, and he laughed a little. "Perhaps I owe this entire situation to sheer luck."
"Indeed." Jewel's voice was slightly wavering and she hoped he didn't notice. Curses but did she ever admire him for what he'd just done! His bravery, his selflessness.. his luck. And dare she say his rugged good looks? He did have a certain rogue-ish charm, now that she looked at him properly, without fear for her life.
She was unaware of the admiration in his own eyes. The Princess. The Royal Princess of Dalmatian Town. He had never been so privileged to see her so up close and personal. She was beautiful, if not slightly disheveled. Her white fur was pristine and smooth, her eyes ruby gems, her face devoid of marring spots. Who was he that she should set eyes upon him! A lowly street mutt, living in a junkyard.
"May I ask where you got your name?" He asked and the more she heard his voice the more she liked it. So gentle and genuine. He sounded so genuine. She loved it. Slowly he dared to raise a paw, and point it at the soft skin around her neck. "Was it those?"
"Erm..yes! Actually.." She placed a paw over her namesake necklace spots, giggling nervously. And then she remembered. "Oh! My sister." She turned back to Lucky, her eyes suddenly worried again. "Good sir, have you chanced to spot my sister?"
Lucky frowned questioningly. "Your sister? What does she look like?"
"A great deal like me, except her eyes are sapphire blue and she wears a black collar with large spikes in it." Jewel wrinkled her nose in distaste. "Rather ugly thing in my opinion." Lucky mused on this information for a moment, scratching his chin with one paw.
"Mm...no. I'm afraid I haven't."
"Oh, you haven't?!" Jewel's red orbs turned sad with disappointment and Lucky turned away. Already he couldn't bear to see those eyes hurting. "...No...but I have seen one thing." Jewel's brows lifted in surprise. "Oh? What's that?"
In one swift movement Lucky plucked the silver crown from the thief's pocket and held it out to her. "Your crown, my Lady."
"Oh, thank you." A weird mixture of relief and disappointment coated Jewel's features as she took the crown and placed it back on her head. To Lucky it sparkled in the light and made her look all the more beautiful. "To be honest I dislike wearing this crown." As she spoke she picked up the cloak she'd been wearing and swung it snugly over her shoulders once more. Lucky cocked an eyebrow.
"Dislike wearing it? Why?"
"Well.. I know it is a symbol of my status as a royal dog, but..." She looked at him sadly. "I think it intimidates the ...if you'll pardon the expression... the commoners. I should rather they approach me as any other dog." The notion struck Lucky as strangely humble. Humble! Imagine, a princess being so humble as to disdain her own crown. It was rather interesting.
"Well, that's very humble of you Your Majesty. But-"
"He's moving!" Jewel cried suddenly and Lucky whipped around to look behind him. The first thief who had threatened Jewel at gunpoint was trying to get up again. Lucky swiftly kicked him in the back with one hind leg and he thumped to the floor with a grunt. "But I think we best be getting a move on. Come on I'll take you out of this place." He offered her a paw and she took it readily, letting him lead her through the thin veil of space past the thief who was still trying to get up.
Lucky passed safely by, however the thief grabbed Jewel by the hind leg as she tried to follow. "LUCKY!!" She screeched in alarm and causing her young hero to turn back, "LUCKY HELP!!" The thief was struggling mightily to keep his grip on Jewel, feeling with his other paw for the gun he'd lost in the darkness of the alleyway. But before he could find it, Lucky ran back and walloped him in the face with a mighty kick. Dazed, the thief's head slumped to the ground and his grip on Jewel's leg loosened.
"Come on Your Highness!" Lucky said, "Run in front of me! Let's get out of here!" With that said, the two hurried down the alleyway and out of harm's way.
