White.
This years winter had brought lot’s of snow. By one night the Dearly farm was covered in white. It was by far one of the coldest winters in years. Frost, cold winds. As where the first weeks of the December month.
But there was spots to see out in the freezing weather. At least if you had good sight. Kit made his way silently through the snow. Everything was silent as he made his way across the farm and into the forest that late evening. He ventured further and further into the forest until he got to the cave. The cave only he knew about.
It was not like his home or anything, he preferred sleeping in the barn among the other puppies. It was just a place he liked to go. A secret place. He dragged with him a bag, making tracks in the snow.
But when he got inside the cave it was as something was different. There was a different smell coming from the cave. Someone else was there! Yes, Kit clearly thought he could hear complaining moans coming from deeper inside the cave.
He went deeper until he reached one of the familiar bigger underground rooms. “Hello?!” Kit’s young voice echoed through the cave. “Are you a ghost?”
A snivel could be heard from behind a few rocks and Kit could clearly see the top of the puppy’s head pointing up from behind the rocks. “Leave me alone” a soar voice whined.
“Who are you?” Kit asked tilting his head.
The voice sighed. “Please.. Leave this place, little girl. Don‘t come back”
Kit stood there confused for a while before he started to giggle. “I’m not a girl, silly! I’m a boy!”
“Of all the bloody!” The hidden figure hissed as he suddenly got up so Kit could see him clearly now, and the sight was shocking: He had several patches of his fur missing, a blue eye, some nasty cut marks and a red stripe forming down his as if it had been torn. The pup looked both starved and cold.
“Of all the bloody pups it had to be you! d**n travelling-people, can’t be trusted, I-” Prince shouted in a wheezy voice before he interrupted himself as if he was afraid of speaking too loud.
Kit tilted his head not really understanding this weird behaviour. “Why are you here? It‘s much warmer insid-”
“Don’t play your tricks on me, gypsy!” Prince snarled and coughed harshly “Once you leave this place, you will march straight to that dreadful Tic-Tac, and tell him where I’m located. Am I right? It would be so typical for someone like that psychotic little freak to team up with some sneaky travelling scum like you, you…!” The pup spat out in clear frustration.
Then he sank to the ground. “Oh well” he sobbed “it would only be a matter of time anyway. Go on… inform your master”
Kit had no idea what was going on.
The wounded pup looked up at still seeing Kit standing there. “What?! Are you still here?! I said be gone and-!”
“Who’s Tic-Tac?”
There was silence. “Y, You mean you don‘t… know… “ Prince said looking at Kit with wide eyes. There was further silence. Kit opened his bag and pulled out some blankets. Prince looked pleading at him. “You look cold. Do you want a blanket?” Kit said smiling. “Please, give it to me.” the shivering pup said and wrapped it around his back immediately after he had retrieved it.
Prince leaned back. “So you are honest when saying you have no idea who Tic-Tac is?” Kit shook his head to this.
“Ah, good for you. A good advice for you, gypsy: Do not ever under any circumstance go near his shed!”
Kit pondered. Did there live a puppy inside that old shed? Kit had walked by once hearing buzzing and bubbling noises from inside. He could swear he saw a dogs head peer out the window, but it was to dark in there to tell from outside. That must have been this Tic-Tac the other puppy was talking about.
“I warn you! That pup is as insane as he is vicious! Just look what he did to me!” Prince said in an upset tone.
Kit found it hard to believe that one of the puppies could do such a thing to another. The thought frightened him a little. He was not going near that shed! That’s for sure.
That being said, Kit was terrified. What kind of puppy was this? “Is that why you are here? You are hiding?” Prince sighed “Indeed that is what I do”
It was first right then Kit recognized who the puppy was which made him jump in surprise. Why hadn’t he seen it? Because of the wounds, probably. But there was also something else.
“hmph, I thought you travellers where at least good for remembering faces” Prince snorted.
“Please, call me Kit. And secondly, It’s not that I don’t remember you, it’s just that.. You where someone else at the farm. You aren’t you now. That’s why I didn’t recognize you”
Prince rolled his eyes “And now look how the mighty have fallen!” he yelled cynically.
Kit had a lot going on in his thoughts. What had really happened to Prince? Back at the farm Kit had seen Prince a few times. There was something about him, that didn’t seem very caring. He seemed somewhat… Arrogant. Yes. The Prince at the farm wasn’t any nice at all. How he talked about uncivilized and loud music are for degenerated minds that never could understand proper behaviour. He could say so much hurtful! But he never actually hurt anyone with his fists.
Anyways. The “Prince” that sat before Kit now was nothing like that. Or was he? Kit got an anxious feeling in his stomach.
“Do you have anything to eat?” Prince asked
Kit hesitated and thought of the kibble that was in his bag. He had thought of saving it for later. “You can’t just let me starve. Go get some at least!” Prince complained.
He had a point. Kit wasn’t the type of person who would let anyone starve. But he got the feeling more and more that Prince where. Hesitantly Kit reached him the bag of kibble. Prince ate with hunger.
Kit thought for a while. Something wasn’t right. He had to know more. More about Tic-Tac.
“Well, Apparently he keeps a lot to himself in his shed. I had not even spoken to him until two days ago when all of this suddenly happened. He socializes with a few puppies though, I only know of one certain one named Crossroads. This Crossroads told me quite a bit about him the other night. Apparently he and some of his siblings was put here after their mother died. I don’t see why he is so crazy though. It is not my fault his mother is dead!” Prince exclaimed.
“Does anyone know how she died?”
“Hm?”
“His mother?”
“No, but I don’t see how that could have anything to do with it!”
“In a way” Prince chuckled his soar laugh and coughed. “You two are quite alike; neither of you are from here, you both have a questionable past and your both bloody d**n freaks. But I tell you this, traveller. You are the better kind of freak.”
Kit stood there with a stone cold look on his face. Inside him his thoughts where swirling. Something was wrong. Act, Kit! Now!
“Tell me, Prince.” Kit began. “Tic-Tac. Kind of a loner. Keeps to himself in his shed. How is it that you suddenly meet him? Did you go into his shed by any chance? Did the loner who likes being alone invite you, a complete stranger, inside? Not likely. Is that why he attacked you? Because you went inside? No, of course not. If he attacked anyone going inside his shed, wouldn’t that also include this Crosseyes he “socializes” with? And in case, why aren’t we seeing more damaged puppies? Could you two have had an argument? Say… you insulting him? Or someone he cares about… Say his mother? I know how your tongue works, Prince. Tic-Tac attack with his fists, you attack with your tongue. Maybe it’s the two of you who are alike.”
Prince’ jaw dropped.
As Kit turned his back ready to leave, Prince got up furiously tears rolling down his eyes. “So this is it?! You are just going to leave me here heartlessly! I have thought a lot of things about you travellers, but never anything like this! You can’t do this! What am I going to do?”
“Run away. Get away from this farm and it’s dangers. Snow is what you’ll eat and drink, and pray that Tic-Tac will not hunt you down. Either that or you could stay here and be found eventually. It won’t be hard to find you here: I already reek of your smell. It’s only a matter of time before someone finds out where you are.” Kit said surprisingly cynical.
Kit turned his back and walked calmly towards the exit. “NOOO!” Prince growled and jumped at Kit forcing him to the ground. Everything went so fast. Prince had pinned Kit to the ground and had punched him several times in the face. Suddenly Prince made a grip for his throat attempting to choke him. Kit gagged and tears ran down his face. Suddenly Kit managed to break loose and knocked Prince over with his forehead. Prince’s nose was bleeding badly and he was laying on the ground squirming.
Kit went outside, but as soon as he got out he sank to the ground crying loudly. What was all this? He couldn’t understand it. Something, no! Everything was wrong! This was not how it was supposed to be. This is not how he was suppose to be! What should he do now? Go home to the barn. Find Phillip, he would know how to calm him down! Yes, that’s what he should do.
Kit got up. And walked steadily back to the barn. All the way back he had a bad feeling. Something terrible would happen soon. He could feel it.
EPILOGUE:
A few days later Kit went back to the cave, to find it empty. Prince had gone. He had taken with him one of the blankets and the entire bag of kibbles. This was the start of something. He could feel it. Yes, something terrible would happen soon. And it had something to do with that dog in the shed.
