This is a film franchise that is considered Illumination's baby. So far, there are two films in the series with a third one on the way, plus a spinoff.
I wanted to make this topic because I have a little rant to make about it.
There don't seem to be very many "true fans" of this franchise. I would think the true fans would love the film because of the story as well as Gru and his connections with the girls. Sadly, that's not what a majority of this film's Fanbase cares about. Most of its fans only watch these movies just to see the Minions bonking each other on the head! I understand, the Minions are supposed to act as the comic relief characters, but they shouldn't try to make them the show-stealers. It's their popularity with the fans that gave them their own spinoff movie, but that's nothing more than a zany, cartoony movie.
AniMatt made a rant recently about animated movies being too cartoony these days, and the Minions are a perfect example of this. "Despicable Me" is an animated comedy; "Minions" is a cartoony movie.
If the writers want to have the Minions in the movie as comic relief characters, that's fine, but there should be a balance between them and the other characters, otherwise, the movie is out in danger of feeling more of a cartoon and less of a movie. Hopefully DM3 will have some better balance in focusing on the characters.
See what I'm saying?

Actually I consider myself a DM fan that actually doesn't like the minions. I prefer Gru over them.
I've seen the first two, (I prefer the first), skipped the Minions movie, and am hopeful for DM3.

Gru does have his moments too, but for the most part, it's the Minions that tend to get the most attention.
I myself am really looking forward to DM3 to see if it shows any improvement.

Everyone loves the Minions. My mom says she loves them and a friend of mine who I borrowed my copies out to says they were the best part.
For one year I was at a State Fair when I played a game until I had a choice: for my niece I could get a replica of Agnes's unicorn or a Minion. I took the Minion.
Part of the reason why the Minions work so well is because they follow that little rule of animation: if you turn off the dialogue and can still understand what is going on, that is how animation works.
I will admit I liked 2 better than 1 by a bit and I even own a steel Minions popcorn bucket.
Now for some music:
