This was based off some idea on a site I made and it did somewhat evolved into an unfinished series of stories about it. Also content warning it does contain some violence and a bit of mature themes.
Introduction
Another day has ended for the dalmatian family. Dinner had been served, hygiene had been checked, and everyone was already curled up and slept in their favorite spots and beds...All except one black dalmatian. Dante, the third oldest out of the 98 pups and the gloomier one had been restless this time, normally he’d be sleeping earlier than his siblings, but this time something is on his mind. The pup stared across the living room to the window that is letting in some soothing moonlight from the curtains, “Why can’t I sleeeep…” the sleepless pup said as he started to stretch out and curl up into a ball once again. After a few more restless attempts the dark pup gave up and started to wander about the house, quietly enough not to wake his siblings. He stumbled into his parent’s room by mistake and rediscovered something from his past.
A piece of charred metal in the shape of a torch was hanging on the wall like a sort of trophy or reminder of a past event. The sighting of this object caused the pup to stumble back a bit, clutching his ears and head as if he saw something unholy in front of him. “Not this...again..” Dante said as he passed out.
Chapter 1
It was a nice and sunny day in Camden, the town was lively and bustling as people and their pets were walking about, having a good day. A younger dalmatian pup was walking about, black coat and white spots with a happy smile on his face. He soon approached a bookstand and had his eyes planted on one book on there. “The Degradation of Earth, by Anri Horace” the book read on its plain black cover. The pup waited till the owner of the stand to look away before snagging a copy of the book and ran back to his home. As he got back home, his older brother with a normal white coat and black spots wearing a red collar with a star on it awaited him. “Stealing books again Dante?” the dog asked. “Dylan...This is her newest book and I already read through ‘Why the Moon will crash into the Earth’ a hundred times already.” Dante responded to his brother, holding the book in his paws tightly. “Alright, but next time ask mom if you need a new book because one of these days you’re not going to get away with stealing again.” Dylan said smiling. “Thank you bro!” Dante said putting the book down and hugging his brother tightly. The two went back inside for the day with book in tow.
Dante took the book back to his favorite spot in the living room, right next to the radio and a beautiful view to the outside through a large paned windows. He flipped open the book and tuned the radio to 140.85. As soon as he did a women’s voice started to speak out from the radio, talking about how even if we fly space shuttle colonies to the Moon, to Mars, and even planets farther off in the vastness of space: But we cannot escape our faith in being extinct or dying off and other wild end of the world theories. Dante was fascinated and intrigued by what she says as he read through his new book.
“What do you see in her stuff that intrigues you bro?” Dylan asked him. “Its all these ideas and theories of her at how this world might end and it's just so interesting to hear all the thought and effort she puts into what she says.” Dante replied back as he turned another page. “You like her alot don’t you, even though she’s a human.” Dylan said. “Personality wise.” Dante corrected him, “But I do think she’s a nice and upstanding person.” Dante added. “Alright I get it, just remember to change the batteries out of the radio when you’re done with it.” Dylan said as he left. “I will-” Dante said before immediately turning his attention to the radio.
“Attention all my Nigher’s out there! I will be hosting a book signing in a few days so don’t miss your chance to meet in the flesh before our world comes crashing down upon us and oh! Bring one of my books so you I can give it my Nigher stamp of approval too! Catch you next time and keep your radios set to 140.85 for more ways to hear our gaia become desolate.” a voice said as the radio shut off, probably due to it running out of power.
This made Dante smile with his tail wagging vigorously at the thought of meeting his idol Anri, but there was one problem...How would he get her to sign his copy of one of her books if he’s not human? He would need to come up with a plan and fast if he’s going to meet her. He then put his book away inside of one of the nearby bookcases and left his spot to see his brother Dawkins as he is the smartest out of his family, he would know a plan to meet her.
Dante soon met up with Dawkins and asked him for his predicament, which his brother understands. “I would love to help you Dante but…” Dawkins said openly. “But?” Dante asked as he tilted his head. “There is no possible way to imitate a human in any sort of way, I don’t even have the know how to make an automaton that acts human so I’m sorry but I guess you’ll have to suffice with that book and radio of yours.” Dawkins explained as he patted his brother on his back, trying to cheer him up with the bad news. Dante sighed as he lowered his head to the ground but then remember another one of his siblings that could help, one with crazy ideas and a thing on not giving up. Dante hugged his brother saying, “Thanks for trying to help.” and left to head upstairs.
As Dante ran upstairs he luckily bumped into the sibling he wanted...and her name was Dolly. As the two reorientated themselves Dolly asked her brother what's up with him once again explaining his situation hoping she has an idea to how to pull it off. “So you want to meet your idol who’s a human huh? I think I know a way to get close without needing to be one of those guys.” Dolly said smiling.
Chapter 2
A few days later…
Dante woke up a bit earlier than usual, knowing that today was the day that he will get to meet his idol for the first time with the help of his sister’s surprisingly non crazy idea. With the additional help of Da Vinci, his artistic younger sister, the three of them made a special letter that should let Dante get to Anri without the use of a human. The plan was also simple: He’s just a dog holding his owner’s book as he’s stuck in the hospital and unable to make it.
Dante slipped out of the house quietly not to disturb his sibling’s and went out to where Anri lives, knowing that she holds all her events in front of her house due to her having it prepped in case the world ends, or so she says. As he made it to the street she lives on he can already see a large line of people with books waiting to be signed by her. Dante groaned at this but he’d knew that there were going to be many like him wanting to meet her as well and so he found a place in line to sit and waited patiently for his turn.
An hour passed and Dante was bored out of his mind, he was only about the 14th thing in line compared to the 59th when he started. He held his book tight and the letter tighter knowing that’s his ticket to meet her. He scanned the area around to pass the time, seeing people walk up and down the streets, small cars driving by, and birds flying from rooftop to rooftop but something caught his attention, four humans looking to be around the age of a young adults wearing red and orange clothing and brandishing a special necklace.
The necklace looked to be in the shape of a torch, not a flashlight but the wooden stick with wrapping serving as an early light source back in the old times. The four of them were just eyeing Anri’s house, not moving their attention away from it as if they see something that others do not. This made him nervous and uneasy but he reassured himself that once he gets his book signed he can head back home for lunch.
Finally after a half hour, it was Dante’s turn with him making eye contact with Anri for the first time and the only time he wont forget. She was a short woman with jet brown hair in the shape of a fringe over her left eye with a purple point at the end of it, she had very noticeable bags which showed that she barely sleeps at all yet she’s fully awake, signing her fans books with a happy smile.
“Look at you ya cute little thing!” Anri said, surprised that a black dalmatian pup was waiting in line. She picked him up much to Dante’s dismay and place him on her table. She then notices the letter and takes it from the pup and reads it thoroughly. “Your owner couldn’t make it huh? I’m sorry to hear that pup.” she said as she slowly takes the book out of Dante’s grasp, opens it up to the first page and signs it for him which made him smile. “Tell him that I hope he gets better as the end will come for us all, and I want him to be in tip top shape for when it happens.” She said as she handed the book back to him with an accompanying head pat.
Dante held the book back and ran home, he hasn’t felt this happy since meeting Doug and his side of the family. As he made it back home and instead of Dylan greeting him, it was Dolly. “So how’d it go ‘Nigher?” Dolly said to him. “It worked without a hitch! I got my copy signed and it's all thanks to you and Da Vinci!” Dante said happily as he hugged her tightly. “Don’t forget to thank her too, she helped correct so of my spelling errors AND make the letter professional.” Dolly added, hugging him back. The two let each other go and went back inside to eat lunch. After grabbing a bite to eat, he went and placed his book in a safer place now that it had gotten signed, he didn’t want it to get damaged or scuffed up by Diesel or someone else so he went upstairs to where his sister Da Vinci paints to see if she was around and luckily she was.
DV soon noticed her brother coming inside her little drawing area and cockily said, “Has my letter made a statement or what?” with Dante replying, “Anything you do is a statement sis.” Da Vinci blushed from the comment with Dante giving her thanks for her help in making the letter as without her finishing touches, it probably wouldn’t had given him passage today. “Say sis? Can you do me one more favour?” Dante asked her. “What is it?” she said. “Can you place the book that got signed into your supply stash? I don’t want this book to be taken without my say and I know you hide your special supplies from everyone else.” Dante said as he handed her the book with Da Vinci grabbing it from him. Da Vinci placed one of her paws onto Dante’s mouth and made a ‘shh’ sound and said quietly, “Don’t be so loud about that...and don’t worry, this book will be safe with me.” Dante took her paw off his mouth and said thanks and left for his sleeping spot as he was tired from standing in line all day and knew it to himself he earned a good rest.
Chapter 3
One Week Later…
An uneventful week had passed since the book signing, nothing new or interesting has happened inside and outside of the house other than occasional shenanigans involving Dolly and Dylan caretaking their younger siblings with other pups doing their own thing...All except Dante. Dante was laying right next to his radio that was set onto 140.85 which was playing just static. “This is just weird...Ever since she signed everyone’s books she just stopped doing her radio show.” Dante said to himself as he stood up and checked the radio’s batteries, assuming he did forget to change them but remembered he changed them just yesterday. “Maybe she gotten tired of doing the radio show...No she would’ve announced it and that's stretching as she loves her radio show with a passion.” Danted said to himself quietly as he turned the radio off. “Maybe I need some fresh air, fresh air and a walk can help me figure this out.” He said as he placed his paw onto the scanner and saw himself out, making sure the door is closed before leaving.
He looked up at the sky, seeing the sky filled with clouds and the sun trying its best to peak out through them but to no avail. It looked like it was about to rain but Dante didn’t mind it, the rain felt good and it saves him from taking a bath later on in the day. As he continued to walk, a human who was clearly in distress ran passed him. This at first looked odd to him but then became worrisome as more people ran past him. “What seems to be troubling them?” Dante said to himself, “I should see what they’re running to.” he added.
Dante followed them to a horrific scene, an apartment complex set ablaze with hot orange flames. Many people were gawking at the burning building with horrific expressions with Dante soon noticing he’d been here one week prior...This apartment was Anri’s home! Dante was horrified at the prospect that Anri was stuck inside and probably will be engulfed in flames soon if nothing is done. Dante looked around to see if his dad’s firefighter team was coming, but yet he heard no sirens or his dad barking...just the sounds of the building falling apart as its wood becomes ash and the roaring of the fire. Something must be done and Dante isn’t going to sit and watch as his idol and others become rendered into ash so he ran into the building to the shock of everyone.
As he ran inside of the building he was met with smoldering heat and thick heavy black fog causing him to cough violently. “A-anyone!? Please if anyone is there y-yell!” he said, coughing some more afterwards even though he knows the humans can’t understand him, they can at least call out for help.
He waited inside what looks and remains to be a lobby of sorts with an elevator in the middle of the room with a spiral staircase leading up and by the front door laid a plaque with names and room numbers which Dante looked to and found that Anri’s room number was C5 on the third floor. He then attempted to run up the stairs, but was stopped as rubble collapsed a few inches in front of him. “For dogs sake!” he yelled and then saw the elevator which was luckily on the main floor and took it up to the third floor.
The elevator slowly climbed up, creaking and churning which made the pup worried that it might come apart soon But luckily it made it to the floor with him running out of it and desperately started checking room numbers while coughing, he didn’t know how much more he can take but it didn’t matter, he must help Anri. “C1...C2...C3.C4...C5!” Dante said as he made it to the room and as soon as he got close he heard talking from Anri...and an unknown person. “So...how does it feel that your world will be coming to a close in a blaze of glory.” a male voice said. “Why are you doing this!?” Anri said distressed. “Its quite simple really, I despise your work, and I despise all of your nilistic ‘Nighers’ or some sh*t you call them.” the voice said in a mocking tone. “But does this justify murder?!” Anri said clearly scared. “You’re going to die here anyway as I’m not letting you leave here alive...So let me grant you a quicker death!” The voice said in an aggressive tone. A window breaking followed by Anri screaming was heard soon after that last sentence.
If this didn’t mortify him then he didn’t know what else might will. His idol, the one he looked up to the most out of any human on this planet...laid dead out in the street. The door was kicked open with a man dressed in orange and red clothing walking out of the room. Dante tried his best to get to the elevator but was caught and picked up by the man. “It’s you...Wrong place at the wrong time it seems, but it doesn't matter now, you heard everything and if I let you go, you’ll just tell the police on me.” the man said as he held the pup tightly.
Dante was scared out of his life, if he doesn't do anything he’ll be killed as well so his only option was to escape. He bit the hand of the man as hard as he could, which made him drop out of his grip which Dante used as an opportunity to flee with the man running after him. As Dante made it back to the elevator, he closed the ornate doors which clearly can be seen through with the man staring at the pup. Before Dante hit the 1st floor button, he started to have a coughing fit, the fog was too much for him, yet the man looked fine and well. “You want to head to the first floor? Let me help you.” The man said showing off a devious smile as he kicked the elevator panel in which caused the elevator to creak loudly before dropping fast without the help of the cables that held it as they were melted through unluckily for the pup.
The elevator crashed with a loud thud, throwing Dante back against the wall of it with enough force to knock him out, but luckily...or unluckily in his case, he’s still conscious enough to note his surroundings. His vision was blurry and he can hardly breath at this point, he felt his life will end here...he just accepted his fate here as he lost his purpose to live as his idol is gone, his happiness was taken from him in one fell swoop...all thanks to the man in the fiery colored garments. The black pup closed his eyes one final time as his vision faded to that of his dad and firefighters rushing towards him.
Chapter 4
The next day…
Dante opened his eyes weakly and scanned his surroundings and he slowly noticed all of his siblings, including his father staring at him with worried expressions. “He’s coming to!” Dolly said happily with Dylan saying, “Dante...are you there?” The black pup saw he was inside of his parent’s room with some kind of mask on his face and muzzle. He soon tried to pry it off but was stopped by Delilah, his mother. “Don’t do that son, that’s helping you breath.” She said as she placed one of her paws on him. “What happened?” he said weakly, “My crew and I found you inside of that burning apartment yesterday, we were very lucky that your injuries aren’t forever life changing.” Doug explained as he walked up next to him, “We don’t know how long you were inside there but luckily your lungs weren’t damaged severely. Though you need the ventilator to help assist your breathing for awhile.” Delilah added.
“That's...lucky…” Dante said as he looked around the room, seeing everyone happy about him being alright. “Thanks dad...if you hadn’t been there…” Dante added but then is interrupted by Doug saying, “No need to talk about that, I’m glad I didn’t lose one of my family in there.” Delilah looked at her son and asked, “Is there anything else you need Dante?” Dante looked to her and said, “Could I have some time to myself for a bit?” This request surprised Delilah as she would assume he would’ve liked to have his books with him or have his siblings stay with him for company, but she abided his request and asked his siblings and father to leave the room with her saying, “If the ventilator starts beeping, call me.” as she went out there and closed the door quietly.
The pup just sat motionless on the bed, staring at the ceiling with an empty look. The happiness and positivity he once had was gone, leaving a newly formed void within himself. One would expect to be filled with anger and sorrow over what had happened last night, but Dante just felt fear, depression, and emptiness. What brought him joy was taken from him in an unjust way with him not even trying to save his idol from the unknown man. He was afraid of his own mortality after hearing her plummet from the apartment into the pavement below, he could’ve ended up like her or died choking to death in the apartment or even worse...be burned alive from the flames around him. He should be thankful that he lived yet he wasn’t, what’s the point in living when nothing will ever bring you the joy of happiness again, the ecstasy of having a reason to live and the feeling to look forward to the next day.
The black pup change will be noticed by his family but when they ask him about his change in disposition he’ll tell them he’s fine in a solemn but empty tone. He just went with the motions while recovering; wake up, eat, read, eat lunch, read, eat dinner, bathe, sleep and repeat until a few days later. He was able to move around and breathe without the use of the ventilator and able to lay down in his old spot once again. Even with his life now back on track, he wouldn’t join in on anything family related, preferring to stay by his own lonesome and read. Everything seemed normal as normal can get until one night.
Dante sprung awake and crept around the house to see if each and every sibling and parent were asleep. Once he confirmed that everyone is sleeping he soon headed to Da Vinci’s basket of art supplies and took two bottles of permanent dye; one of purple, and one of pink and went into the bathroom. He shut the door quietly and locked it so no one can disturb him for what he was about to do to himself. He hopped up to the sink and looked at himself in the mirror and said, “I’ll never be able to move on from that night...But dwelling on it will get me nowhere.” He opened the purple dye and used one of his paws to paint the spots on his left ear to purple. “The one thing I can do now...is to honor your memory..” He opened the pink dye bottle and used his other paw and painted pink half circles under his eyes and closed the bottle. “I will mantle your look...and finish what you started.” He emptied the purple dye onto both his front paws causing the sink to be bathed in the purple coloring. He’d made sure that he didn’t spill anymore dye or leave anymore coloring around the bathroom. “With these paws...I’ll create theories about the end of the world this planet has never seen!” he quietly yelled, “And most importantly, I’ll find who did this to you and make him pay…” he added. Dante soon opened the bathroom and placed the dye bottles back into the art basket before making for his spot, he then stretched and curled up to sleep. Tomorrow will be the day he’ll walk the trail of revenge..
Chapter 5
The next morning…
Dante woke up with his siblings staring at him which caused him to spring out of his spot up to the window sill nearby. “What's with the new look Dante?” Dylan asked, “So that's why Da Vinci is aggravated this morning, you took her paint and never put it back didn’t ya?” Dolly added, looking at the two bottles of dye standing upright where he once slept. “Its...Its a new look! I needed to change so here it is.” Dante responded to them. “Why pink and purple? Only on your front paws, face and left ear?” Dawkins asked him. Dante made an upside down U motion with his paws and said, “Statement.” “If you needed to change your look, you could’ve let me know?” Da Vinci said poutily as she grabbed the dye bottles. “Just for that get your butt over here right now.” She added. Dante nodded and jumped down to her.
Da Vinci opened up what remains of the purple dye and walked behind him with Dante giving her a look of worry. “What’re you going to do?” He asked her. “Finishing your look.” she replied. She dipped one of her paws inside the bottle and covered half of Dante’s tail with the purple liquid. “There, now you can make a statement.” Da Vinci said as she closed the dye bottle and walked back into her art room. “Uh...Thanks sis?” He said as she left.
“Are you feeling any better after the incident bro?” Dylan asked him. “Yes, I feel much better now but can I ask you a question?” Dante replied. “Sure.” Dylan said. “When will dad be home, I need to talk to him.” Dante said as he looked out the window. “Him and mom should be home in the evening.” Dylan answered. “Thanks.” Dante said as he went back upstairs.
Time passed and soon enough it was evening, Doug and Delilah came back from their respective jobs and joined the family for dinner. Afterwards before Doug went to his bed, Dante stopped him and asked him questions about the incident including the fire such as who are the suspects, was there evidence left behind that survived, and why it took them so long to get there. Doug answered a few of them firstly why it took them so long: A firefighter kept delaying them from getting to the building saying ‘he needs more information.’They soon found out they were lies later that night which led to him being fired for disrupting their job. Secondly that nothing survived the fire as by the time they had the flames under control, most of the building had already collapsed into itself with police still sifting through the wreckage looking for anything suspicious. And lastly that the police hadn’t ruled what the cause of the fire was.
“That’s all I can answer son. I hope I was able to help.” Doug said.
“You did dad, thank you for answering my questions.” Dante replied.
The two hugged before heading off to bed, but Dante wouldn’t be sleeping tonight. An hour passed with Dante waking up and quietly snuck out of the house and made his way to the burnt wreckage of the apartment to search for evidence himself. As he made it to the street, he hid behind a trash bin due to the police patrolling around the street most likely trying to keep would be thieves from scavenging what remains of the apartment complex. Seeing that this won’t be an easy task, Dante snuck to any sort of cover that will hide him from being caught by the police and most likely get sent to the pound. Through sheer luck, he made it to the area that once housed many humans including his idol. He noticed the chalk outline of a human who plummeted onto the asphalt, he knew who it was but continued pass it without thought or hesitation.
There was little to look around as all there seemed to be was burnt and blackened wood all around the area he stood and started to look around moving chunks of wood to see if they hid something and digging through the dirt if something was buried until something caught his eye. Something was flashing under another set of burnt wood and he soon rushed over there quietly and dug through it. He found what looked to be a small pin of some kind with the main component of it being a small torch, it looked warped and had charred marks on it as well assumingly from the fire.
This could very well be the only thing that survived that horrendous night, but he never seen a piece of jewelry of this kind before. He could’ve suspected someone had it custom made for something but he didn’t want to ask himself anymore questions as he had to make it back home without getting caught. He grabbed it and snuck his way back home quietly.
He was able to get home silently and quietly as he placed his paw on the scanner which gave him access to the inside, he then closed the door and locked it tightly then made a silent beeline to his parent’s room. “I won’t be able to hide this from my brothers or sisters, mom and dad will know something is up as well if they find this...The best hiding place for this is plain sight.” Dante said to himself quietly as he grabbed some string and tied it onto the pin and hung it on the wall nearby some picture frames. He then quietly walked back to his spot and slept for the rest of the night.
Chapter 6
Present Time
Dante awoke in the middle of his parent’s room from fainting the night before.
“Another nightmare…” Dante said as he got up and looked to the necklace on the wall. “My only physical remnant of that time is that necklace I found. I feel that it could have belonged to that person who was with me in the building when it was ablaze with fire.” he said as he grabbed hold of the pin which now resembled a makeshift necklace and ran down the stairs and went to Dawkins for assistance. Dante showed the necklace to Dawkins and explained his story with it which prompted Dawkins to go tell Dylan but Dante stopped him by covering his mouth.
“This will be between us. I need to know who made this necklace and why outta everything in the apartment that this survived the fire.” Dante said quietly to him while taking his paw away from Dawkin’s mouth.
“Alright...I’ll try and find who made it but if we can’t you’ll have to turn it in to Pearl as its still evidence.” Dawkins replied.
“Fine.” Dante said as he handed the pin to Dawkins who then took it into his room of inventions and contraptions with Dante heading back to his usual place and pulling out his radio to listen to calm music. As he started to tune to different stations, he stumbled upon a news report which caught his attention.
“Attention all residents of Camden Town, we have another report of a murder in our town. The victim’s name was Andre Briar who was an up and coming writer who was murdered just a few short hours ago from numerous stab wounds by a pen. Suspect’s identity is unknown, but folks who saw the attack noted that the assailant wore an orange robe with hood on which obscured his face. If anyone has information about the assailant, please let the police know so they can arrest the criminal and bring him/her to justice.” the radio said before switching to music which Dante then tuning the radio for another station.
“That’s great. Yeah that really gives me good vibes knowing that a murdurer is running around. Makes me glad that after a long radio break I hear this.” Dante said sarcastically as continued browsing stations.
“Dante? Can you come back, I have something to show you that you may or may not want to look at.” Dawkins said to him.
“Bet it can’t be worse than what I heard on the radio just now.” Dante replied as he went back to Dawkins.
Dawkins was sitting at the table looking through the Pawpad, the family’s tablet with a grim expression. As Dante made it to Dawkins, he gave the pad to Dante telling him to “look through it.” which made Dante nervous as if his brother is worried, then this may be serious.
“That necklace has been linked to multiple homicides over the years but you know what the real kicker is?” Dawkins said to him
“What?” Dante asked.
“All of the victims were all up and coming writers or well known ones. Each one and every one of them.” Dawkins said as he passed Dante a piece of paper listing names of humans, all of which had some history with writing.
“This...This can’t be real…” Dante said as he placed the pawpad and the paper down.
“Then I guess...That your idol was murdered by whoever killed the others then.” Dawkins said as his ears drooped.
“Don’t be sad bro, you didn’t do anything wrong. You gave me a stronger motive to punish whoever was responsible.” Dante said as he patted Dawkins on the back.
“I won’t allow you to do that Dante, in fact none of us will. We almost lost you once and we’re not going to lose you a second time!” Dawkins yelled at him.
“I’m not going to rest until whoever did this get away and continue killing!” Dante yelled back at him.
Dawkins wanted to yell back at him but seeing his brother act in this way made him realize that this is what he wants to do, to get back at the one who killed his idol and almost killed him too. Dawkins sighed and calmed himself by saying, “No one knows who’s the murderer is anyways and the fact that all these necklaces are probably in police custody means you won’t get far even with the one you took.”
“I’ll find a way.” Dante replied as he looked to the pin on the table. “I won’t rest till I do.” Dante added.
Unaware of the two pups, Da Vinci was listening in on them with a serious look on her face as she held a necklace of her own, one with a paintbrush instead of a torch.
To Be Continued...
