Only a pair of modestly spotted white ears were visible over the edge of the dusty old attic box. A golden earring flickered around in the left ear. One by one, old musical theater records were tossed out, rolling across the floor. To the side, an older fully grown dalmatian clad in cobalt blue collar and a matching earring in his right ear, sat waiting patiently. Soon enough, a young frustrated female dalmatian pup popped and loudly declared with a pout throughout the attic; «Ah can nae find mah song!»
«Well, Anya dear..» Kit, the older dalmatian said calmly, before he continued: «Why don’t you ask your uncle Clayton? He knows a lot about musical theater!» To Kit’s side sat another fully grown dalmatian male, this one clad in a red collar, ears black with three white spots, seemingly proud at being declared and expert.
«Okay! Do ye know the one tha’ goes ba-dum-dum-BA-BA-BABABAAAA?» Anya’s tail wagged hopefully. Kit’s head cocked to one side, not really able to glean anything from his adopted daughter apparently trying to perform the entire orchestra at once. With a smile, he attempted to curb her enthusiasm; «Sweetie, I don’t think Uncle Clayton knows that one-» «I know JUST the one!» Clayton exclaimed.
«What?» Clayton grinned at the absolutely baffled Kit and joyous Anya; «I know musical theathre!» Kit only grinned with Anya now out of the box, almost-patiently pacing around and in-between both of their legs. «I forgot what a dork you are» Kit smiled, to which Clayton booped his nose as if to shove him outside. «Go out and run, you!» Clayton laughed. «Me and Anya will get this show on the road!»
«All right, all right…» Kit said, about to leave, but yet another grin curled up on his muzzle. «Anya, dear…» He turned around, passing a mischievious wink to Clayton before facing his daughter; «Don’t howl so loud Uncle Clayton’s ears fall off now» The happy female stopped dead in her tracks, now looking almost petrified. «F-fall off?! No, Ah would never do tha’! Uncle Cleyton, Ah promise Ah will sing verra verra sweet and soft!»
Clayton chuckled. She was at that gullible age. Perhaps even a tad more gullible than most. «Don’t worry, Anya. Your dad’s only joking. You see, my ears actually -did- fall off once, but fortunately we stuck them back on with super-glue! Now they can never fall off!» Anya’s jaw dropped; «NO WAY!» She exclaimed, envisioning it all in her head.
«Uhuh, uhuh..» Clayton continued «You see these three white spots on my ear? Actually super-glue!» Kit grinned, Clayton’s mind seemed to carry on with the story. Anya could only look up at the two in shock and disbelief, though while clutching both of her ears. «The ears thing caused your dad to laugh so much, his tail fell off. Fortunately, we had enough super glue left!» Clayton waxed on, matter of factly. «All true» Kit confirmed, brandishing his tail to the now ever-worried Anya. «So you better be careful about laughing too much!»
«All right, that’s enough!» A voice called out, as the hatch to the attic flew up. In came Kendra, easily recognized by her pink collar, black ears, icy blue eyes, and somewhat impatient brow. «Anya dear» she said as calmly and reassuringly as she could to the small girl. «Your dad and your uncle Clayton are being colossal doofuses. You van’t laugh your tail off or howl your ears off. That’s impossible.» Anya looked like she had received the most relieving news in her life, which might as well have been true. «Oh pheeewww…» She let out a long sigh. Then her eyes suddenly blinked open. «Wait! Does that mean ye lied to me?!» her voice was almost shrill with disbelief.
Kit & Clayton immediately realized their little joke might have gone a bit too far. They passed awkward looks in-between one another back and forth occasionally drifting off to Kendra who was making it increasingly clear that they had to row themselves out of this one. «We uhh..» Kit said, searching for words. «We just wanted to play a little prank on you. But we didn’t mean anything wrong by it. And now we’re very, very sorry!»
«He’s right!» Clayton chimed in, trying to alleviate the situation. «We were always going to tell you the truth and say sorry. That’s very important if you’re gonna play on prank someone, always remember to say sorry and make sure it’s okay afterwards. Can you forgive us?»
Anya looked up at the two, thinking long and hard. «Hmmmm..» Kit and Clayton barely looked at her while she was pondering her case. «Okay!» she exclaimed suddenly, smile back on her muzzle. «Ah forgive ye! But in the future Ah’m gonna prank ye to!» she proudly vowed. «I guess that’s only fair..» Kit muttered, hoping he was off the hook.
«What’s going on, up here?» A younger, male voice called out, and two white ears suddenly appeared behind Kendra. «Oh, Myles!» Anya called out happily running over to meet her friend. «h-Hey, Anya!» Myles smiled, his tail wagging and cheeks blushing slightly. «Myles! Ah learned a verra scary trick and it might make yer ears fall off! Wan’ me to show ye?» she grinned mischievously. «e-Ears fall off?» Myles stammered. «Oh, Anya, I’m not sure sure that’s smart. How will we get them b-back on?» «Easy! Superglue!» Anya retorted. Myles took a few steps back. «Oh, I don’t know..» he said. «It sounds a bit scary!»
Before they knew it, Anya was chasing Myles around the house laughing. Kendra sighed; «You boys happy?» Clayton pondered; «You know, all things considered, I think that went fairly well.» «Axel’s gonna have so many questions for me tonight» Kit chuckled defeated. «He’s always telling me I need to watch what I say around her. Pups pick up on stuff pretty fast!» The three adult dalmatians found their way to the attic window, so they could better observe their kids now both laughing and playing around outside with the other pups. «Oh well» Clayton said smiling optimistically, putting a paw on both Kendra and Kit’s shoulders. «I think the three of us did our share of silly things, and we turned out all right, didn’t we?»
