I'm just approaching the idea with a level of caution, Belchic. Do you remember what happened the last time they adapted the Super Mario Bros. into a movie, back in 1993? You know, that dumpster fire with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo? And they had Dennis Hopper as King Koopa when Jurassic Park was playing in the other room?
How big of a letdown was that?

What did I just tell you, Trey? That was 30 years ago! Video game movies today are nowhere near as bad as they were back in those days! If you’re going to set your expectations that low and expect it to be as bad as that atrocity, then you clearly have no hope for it whatsoever. The trailer made it pretty clear that this upcoming movie is going to actually feel like the video games this time! And like I said, Detective Pikachu and the Sonic the Hedgehog movies were very successful and beloved by audiences. You loved them, so what makes the Mario movie different? (Other than the plot of the games and comparing it to the 1993 live action movie?)

Belchic... I'm going to wind up seeing this movie one way or another. It's kinda my thing and I need to understand what kids like. I just feel that maybe if I go in without any really powerful feelings I may have a clearer head and will be able to formulate a stronger opinion based on that. Might be better than expecting the world and then coming away disappointed.
You do understand right?

The teaser trailer looks very promising, but I will go see it in the theaters with an open mind.

The next trailer for the Super Mario Bros. movie was just leaked out today! youtu.be/TnGl01FkMMoAll I can say is, wow! This unveiled so much stuff! It looks like Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi and Donkey Kong are going to be in the movie for sure. It also looks like they're incorporating elements from Mariokart and Super Smash Bros. in this movie too! Though I doubt this will convince Trey_Vore to change his mind still.

All I'm going to say Belchic...
After seeing Strange World, there was a sense of personal enjoyment I was missing. Thinking back to the original trailer, like I said, my stance probably softened a bit. These movies are meant to be fun, and once Disney is done going woke, they will probably learn from that mistake and stop trying to appease someone. Trust me it will be good for their bank accounts.
This movie now looks like fun so I'm now saying "Bring it!"

Alright! I've been waiting a long time for AniMatt to post his first look at 2023, and here it is! These are his thoughts on what is coming up this year:
Super Mario Bros. - I don't know how this is going to turn out, but all I know is that I'm so excited for this! Nimona - SHE'S ALIVE! SHE'S ALIVE! High in the Clouds - All I know about this is this is based on a book that Paul McCartney wrote, so we'll see how it goes, I guess? The Monkey King - I do like the legend, so maybe they'll do something cool with this. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - No pressure, Sony. Just the most important sequel you've ever made that you put most of your resources on, and everyone's expecting will be another masterpiece. Elemental - Oh, I like where this is going! TMNT: Mutant Mayhem - I'm not a big TMNT fan, but judging by who's involved, this sounds crazy, and now I'm curious. Spellbound - After "Luck", don't expect me to be excited for this one. PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie - That first movie was surprisingly good, and I'm down to see what they've got here. Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget - I mean, I love the first movie, but I didn't ask for a sequel... Trolls 3 - ...and I certainly did not ask for a sequel to this either! Wish - This is the most Disney thing I've ever heard, and I cannot wait! Migration - Birds...Yep, just birds...Then again, this will be from the director of "Ernest and Celestine", so we may have to keep our eyes out for this one.
Now, for contrast, here's my updated list:
Super Mario Bros. - You have no idea how long I’ve waited for this! Nimona - Goodbye, BlueSky. High in the Clouds - Paul McCartney wrote a book? Interesting. The Monkey King - Ehh…We’ll see. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - The fans can have this one…. Elemental - …but I’ll take this one! TMNT: Mutant Mayhem - Cowabunga, dudes! Spellbound - We’re in trouble! PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie - Oh boy! Let’s hope this one feels like a worthy successor! Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget - Are you sure people still want this after all these years? Trolls 3 - HERE WE GO AGAIN! Wish - A masterpiece waiting to happen! Migration - ILLUMINATION IS BACK, BABY!
Looks like an exciting year, and I can't wait!

High in the Clouds - Interesting. - O... kay... title please? Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - WOO-HOO! Elemental - Great! TMNT: Mutant Mayhem - Cowabunga! Spellbound - Hmm... nah. PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie - Another matinee coming... Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget - 'kay, late much? Trolls 3 - No more, please! Wish - Survey says yes! Migration - Not a clue.

Okay. I’ve held this off long enough. Here are my rational thoughts for 2023’s lineup:
The Super Mario Bros. Movie: This movie, I am super hyped about, especially after seeing the trailers for it! You seriously have no idea how long I've been waiting for Mario to make a comeback in the world of entertainment (other than video games)! I've been waiting for probably 25 years or so, and even after all the rumors, announcements and delays, it's finally coming, and judging by what I saw in the trailers, it looks like it's going to be awesome! I'm not even going to think about that live action attrocity with Bob Hoskins like a lot of other people are doing; I'm going to walk into the theater with an open mind about this one!
Nimona: A movie that has been in production limbo for quite a long time, and it's finally coming to fruition. I'm probably not going to see it since I was never a huge fan of BlueSky Studios. Though I know this will be their last film since Disney shut them down last year.
High in the Clouds: I actually didn't know about this one until recently. From what I heard, it's based on a book written by Paul McCartney. I don't know if it's coming to theaters or directly to streaming, but I might check it out if I got some time to kill.
The Monkey King: Never heard of this one, and I have no desire to check it out.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: Of all the animated films coming out this year, this is probably the most highly-anticipated one of all. The first movie was a surprisingly huge success, and some are even going as far to say it's the best animated film of the 2010 decade. Call my opinion an unpopular opinion, but I'm going to pass on this one. I wasn't too impressed with the original movie; to me, it just felt like another everyday superhero flick. The fans can have this one, but count me out.
Elemental: Considering this movie is by Pixar, I'm sure there is a lot of hype towards this one. I enjoy Pixar a lot, though I feel some of their films are a tad overrated. This one, however, is a Pixar movie that I'm actually super hyped about! The public's reaction seems to be split on this movie: half of them are hyped, and the other half are getting tired of Pixar recycling some of their old ideas; I'm in the former half, and I trust that they've got another hit up their sleeves with this one.
TMNT: Mutant Mayhem: I was a Ninja Turtles fan back in the day, and I'm not really up to speed with the new continuity of the franchise, but this one I might check out. Once I start seeing trailers for it, I'll formulate an opinion on it, and if I think it looks cool enough, then perhaps I'll give it a go.
Spellbound: When I first heard about this movie, I viewed it as a rip-off of "Raya and the Last Dragon" and "Encanto" at the same time! Though considering this is made by John Lasseter at Skydance Studios, I'm not surprised, and after hearing the stories about how he worked on "Luck", I really don't feel motivated to see this one at all.
PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie: The first PAW Patrol movie surprisingly exceeded my expectations. I still have a lot of catching up to do with the series itself, but when I see this movie, I'm hoping it will feel like a worthy successor to the first one and maybe even surpass it. I'm hoping to see other pups from the show in this movie too like Everest.
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget: I'm sure there is a lot of massive hype for this movie considering how popular Ardman is with animation fans, especially since "Chicken Run" is one of their most beloved films. I honestly was not demanding a sequel to this movie, especially not 23 years after the original, so I'll probably pass on this.
Trolls 3: I haven't seen any of the Trolls movies, and I have no desire to, so what makes you think my opinion on this one will be any different?
Wish: I remember hearing about this at the D23 Expo, and it sounds like Disney is going all out to make this the most Disney-worthy movie they have ever made, and I cannot wait to see it! I just know this movie is going to be a masterpiece and will join the ranks of all of Disney's other big hits!
Migration: I don't know too much about this movie yet, but I know the studio behind it is Illuminaiton. I'm a big fan of Illumination's movies. "Despicable Me", "The Secret Life of Pets" and "Sing" are amongst my favorite animated film franchises in recent years, though I'm not a big fan of their spin-offs and adaptations of Dr. Seuss books. With this movie, I'm just excited to see a new original idea from Illumination for once, and that's enough to get me hyped for this. (Hopefully, I won't have to wait too long for "The Secret Life of Pets 3" and "Sing 3".)

This is my rationale on these upcoming movies:
Super Mario Bros. - Still shaky on this idea. It's just because the games are made with the intention of being fun, not story or character development. So I will hold off any excitement until I see the movie for myself.
If anyone thinks video game movies are much different than how they were in the 90s, I'd like to know what they have to say about Mortal Kombat or Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. And those two came out TWO years ago.
Nimona - I know that Blue Sky hasn't been the best studio at least from a critical standpoint. So not a lot to be hyped up for here. The fact this is going to be their final movie is not filling me up with hope.
High in the Clouds - Being this is a movie based on a book by Paul McCartney, I'm interested.
The Monkey King - This movie is going to be based on the Chinese myth Sun Wukong. My history with the character dates back to seeing his recent Death Battle victory, but I say a little culture is always good.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - Being a fan of the original movie, I will most definitely want to see this one.
Elemental - Being this is Pixar, I do have a good feeling. It feel a bit like that "Day & Night" short cartoon, but it will probably be good.
TMNT: Mutant Mayhem - Being a Ninja Turtles fan, this is another definite yes from me.
Spellbound - This already sounds like another Raya and the Last Dragon. Being that this isn't Disney, it might be a lot cheaper and with John Lasseter involved I think I should avoid this one.
PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie - I have no use for PAW Patrol. The babies can have this franchise, and they're welcome to it.
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget - The original Chicken Run I did like, but this is coming out 23 years after the original movie! Well, Puss in Boots: the Last Wish turned out to be really solid and that came out 11 years after the original, but I doubt this will be worth waiting for.
Trolls 3 - I never once bothered watching anything related to this franchise, not even the holiday specials. So I'll pass.
Wish - Disney's been hyping this movie up a lot, and hopefully it will be great.
Migration - I haven't read anything about this movie, so I'm left in the dark about it.

The first trailer for TMNT: Mutant Mayhem was just released today. I watched it, and after viewing it, I’ve decided I’m going to pass on it. While I do find it interesting that the film is done in claymation, it’s clearly in the new continuity, which means I will feel alienated watching it. I especially am appalled with how my favorite turtle, Donatello, turned out: he’s wearing glasses, doesn’t do any action, and he sounds like he hasn’t even hit puberty yet! It’s not just Don that I’m mad at. Raph and Leo both act very mean-spirited, and Mike doesn’t even get any lines that I don’t even know he’s there! So I’m passing on this one. Trey will probably like it though.

We still have a long wait until the first mainstream animated film of the year, but in the meantime, AniMatt has reviewed “The Magician’s Elephant”. Here are his scores:
Story: 4/10 Animation: 8/10 Characters: 4/10
Overall: 5/10 = 53%
I never heard of this movie, and I was honestly expecting a seal of approval for this one, but it looks like we’re off to a not so good start this year.
