Disney's 18th animated feature, and the last animated feature that Walt was in charge of and would live to see completed.
When I was a kid, I watched this one a lot. It's very entertaining. Although, Trey_Vore considers this to be one of the worst in the catalog.
I can see somewhat why. It's undeniably underrated, and it seems all over the place in a lot of ways. It also sets the stage for a saga, which doesn't ever happen.
However, one problem I have with this movie is the villain. Madame Mim is a poor excuse for a Disney villain. If she's supposed to be the villain, why is she introduced so late in the film? On top of that, she gets defeated in like 5 minutes! Throughout the movie, nobody ever talks about her, and we never learn about her backstory with Merlin. It doesn't build up any mystery. Compare that to Shere Khan from The Jungle Book. As the movie begins, we don't see Shere Khan right away, but throughout the movie, characters talked about him. It built up a lot of suspense. He doesn't appear until half-way through the film, but at least the viewers were prepared for his coming. But here, this villain pops up out of nowhere with no build up, and then she's gone right away. Other than being another lesson for Wart, what was the whole point of her scene? Even the people at Disney themselves had the balls to claim that she's the villain! I wouldn't doubt them, but couldn't they have developed her a little better? She's a joke!

I've only seen bits and pieces of this movie back when that channel was called 'Toon Disney' <<

Yep. Beginning with this film, a rather grim sign of what was coming for the next few years.
I will have another thread like this one hopefully soon.

It was... actually one of my favourites as a kid. I guess you're right that this movie doesn't follow any typical formula in regards to villain. As a kid, I never thought of Mim as a villain - just one of the many dangers Wart meets along with the wolf and the nasty fish. I thought of her and Merlin simply as rivals who always fought over morals, as Merlin was by far a more kind magician.
I actually thought the villain was Kei who kept Wart's spirit down all the time. I guess I would question it had I watched it today, but I think it already has too much nostalgic value for me, so I'll essentially consider it a likeable movie.

It's not really one of my favorite animated Disney movies, but I loved the characters. My favorites are Wart and Archimedes.

I wonder what you guys think of my idea of who has the role of antagonist in this movie. hotlink, you really don't have to post everything in red all the time. There is nothing that says he can't. Besides, you're off topic.

I agree with you, Kit. I think Kaye and Ector seemed more like villains than Mim did.
