Alright, let's take the new section for a test drive with a discussion of the original animated film that most likely introduced most of us to the world of 101.
(This is sweet, I literally can almost smell new car scent when using this section of the board)
Fire away folks...

I can't really decide if this is one of the most popular or least popular Disney movies of all time. A lot of people seem to love it, but Disney fans don't seem to talk about it very often. Not to mention, I have seen so many Disney fans make lists of their Top 10 Disney Animated Features, and not one of them has 101 Dalmatians! Also, it may interest you to know that Walt himself actually hated the film, but Dodie Smith and her husband loved it (even though it didn't follow her book at all). So is this critically one of Disney's best or one of their worst?

While not the most popular Disney film in the animated canon, over its various releases it was one of their biggest money makers. The film racked in $253,000,000 making it the 190th highest grossing movie ever to date (and one of the oldest if not THE oldest film to break the $200 million mark without inflation adjusting). Among films that come in just behind it are Rambo: First Blood Part II, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Knocked Up and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. The live-action 101 film from 1996 made 136,000,000 by comparsion
But yeah, this one basically flies under the radar. Might be because Walt himself wasn't that big a fan of it. The recent DVD confirms he liked working with Dodie Smith and he liked the story but didn't really like the animation designs that came with the studio's moderized and cheaper animation that was first used on 101 (Given the box office failure of Sleeping Beauty though it's not like they had a choice).
Could also be because it lacks a lot of Disney's animated film trademarks...no princesses, no fantasy setting with a more realistic one instead, no missing parents, only one real music number (they had a few others that they cut, one for H&J and one for the Dals that was REALLY misplaced and would have killed the film's momentum late in the third act) and rougher animation. Still I find most of those to actually be pluses, I like that the characters don't just drop everything to sing a silly song and that the world feels more real because of the presence of cars and TV with big advertising everywhere. It seems lived in unlike other Disney films like Cinderalla where everything is out there.
This is the film that really got me into cinema car chases with a really great one by animation standards one at the climax. Actually by live-action standards of the time it's quite good too, compare 101's chase to say the one the next year in the original Bond film Dr. No and you'll see the guys at Disney were really on the ball (Chases didn't start hitting their peak until Bullitt came out in 1968).

The live-action 101 film from 1996 made 136,000,000 by comparsion Yeah, And also according to the, "Yahoo Top Highest Grossing Animated Films Of All Time", "101 Dalmatians" made it to, Second place. X3 (Of course, Snow white would be up high because that was the first, Animated film. o.O) Yeah, "101 Dalmatians" is a more, Down to, Earth film. It has more believeable characters, a setting closer to home and with the song numbers, At least they have a proper reason for singing them (e.g. "Cruella Devil", "Dalmatian Plantation" being songs, Roger sings because he is a, Song Writer" and, "Kanine Krunchies" as that was an, Advert on the, Television). I say that the film is one of, Possibly, THE BEST, Animated film from, Disney. Likeable Characters, Good Villains, An Easy To Understand Premise with, Excellent Execution and The styles, Disney adapted make it creative. X3 Some people even recognise the, "Animated Film" more than the, Original Novel. X3 Yeah, That was some, Creative License, Disney had there. It actually is a more epic climax then the, Original Novel. (Cruella Doesn't even notice them in the, Novel) This climax for the, Film where, Cruella chases them is a better climax. X3 Also, The way they animated the, Vehicles was clever too. They actually made models of the, vehicles (With bolder lines and so on) and then, filmed them. They then placed the, Film with the new, Process to get them to, Cell and then coloured them there. You must admit, they did put their new techs to good use and checked it as well. X3 I also think it makes the, Sketchers feel better too because they know it's actually their drawings on screen and not a traced one. You can see some pencil marks as they did it on purpose to show it is them. X3 But I will say, "101 Dalmatians" is a, Pearl of a, Film. It's one that, deserves WAY more credit. It's like when you're digging in the dirt and happen to come across a valuable jewel worth millions. That is this film, An pearl waiting to be found to recieve the, Credit is so richly deserves. X3 It deserves alot more than other, Films which, Disney seem to force within our faces. O.O

In all honesty, I find this movie to be... can I say... somewhat overrated.
I could say why but you're not going to disagree--even why Disney seems to rather give us the live-action remake and the series instead.
But that's a topic for when I actually learn how to make YouTube videos.

If anything, I think it’s more underrated. If you don’t like the movie, then why are you even a part of this board? It’s not a sin to like other incarnation of Dalmatians other than the series and the live action movie. Please, Trey, can’t you just let us watch and enjoy the movie whenever we want?

How bout you let Trey voice his opinion instead of getting upset every time he says something you disagree with, Belchic? XP
This ... well, it would have been one of my more favored films growing up if it wasn't that for years I only had a very poor VHS recorded copy that wasn't even clear enough to view at most times during the film, so I had no idea what was going on at some points. But I loved the merchandise and I had an entire imaginary world set up around my Dalmatian plushies. I used to play with them for hours. The whole second-gen thing on dA and DWoW revived my love for those old characters too, it just brings back a lot of good happy feelings.

Like I said, I could tell you but... you won't disagree. Like what AniMat once said in his review of Rio 2: "I remember watching the first Rio when it first came out and I'll admit, it was a pretty good movie! I wouldn't say it's Blue Sky's best work since the writing is kinda weak, but it does make up for it with some nice animation and songs that are fun and sometimes pretty memorable." I do owe more to the series since it helped make Disney my thing once again.

I recently held a poll on Facebook for the most underrated Disney movie. I listed all the Disney movies I could think of that I felt were underrated. Guess what movie got the most number of votes? 101 Dalmatians! Many Disney fans agree that it is a very underrated classic!
