I know this isn't really a collection topic, but I'll let Cuddly and/or Shadow approve of this, and if they don't, then please don't delete it; just move it to a more appropriate destination.
I'm here to share with you guys the evolution of 101 Dalmatians as it was advertised in the theaters and the video and DVD releases. I was inspired by James Rolfe, who did a video sharing movies he had different formats of, so that's sort of how I'm going to do this. So, without further ado, let's begin:
First one we got up here is the original theatrical poster from 1961. I think this cover is pretty cool, as it shows all the major characters in it. Most of the Dalmatians are in the background, but that's okay. I tend to care more about the puppies, but in the movie, they were intended to be extras. As you can see, Pongo and Perdita are the largest characters in the pic, which pretty much tells us that they're the stars of the movie. Of course, there's Roger and Anita hanging on their collars, which sort of gives you the idea that this movie is supposed to be a comedy, which it somewhat is.
Alright, so that's that. Now, let's skip ahead here.
Here's the poster for the 1991 theatrical reissue of the movie, the one that I went to go see theatrically. I'd give anything to see that movie in the theaters again. As you can see here, Cruella is more of the central focus on this poster, and the Dalmatians are all scattered around her. Pongo and Perdita are barely noticable, though, and that's what makes it kind of a dissappointment.
Now, here's the original 1992 VHS release of the movie. Now, I like this one a lot. We've got Pongo, Perdita, Cruella, and some puppies that look familiar to the casual fans like Lucky and Rolly. The puppies look adorable in their playful manner, Perdita looks cute, and Cruella looks threatening. I just love this cover art. It's so fun to look at.
Now, here's another VHS version released in 1999. I don't like this cover very much. I mean, it's alright, but something about it just doesn't look right to me.
And last but not least...
...here's the DVD. To be more precise, it's the Platinum Edition DVD, released in 2008. This cover is just gorgeous. I mean, it's still not as good as the 1992 VHS, but it's still a great work of art. I love it a lot better than most of the other Disney Platinum Edition DVD's. But yeah, as you can already guess, "101 Dalmatians" is my #1 all-time favorite Disney movie. I can watch it over and over again and never get tired of it. The movie is 79 minutes long, and they make every minute count! As for the DVD, well...some of the special features are a little disappointing in comparrison to the special features on some of the other DVD's like "Snow White", "Alice in Wonderland" or "Peter Pan", but there is one feature on here, that I find truly amazing called "Sencerely Your's, Walt Disney", which has these two people dictating letters written by Walt Disney and Dodie Smith sent back and forth. It really amazed me, because I didn't know Walt was good friends with Dodie; and you know, after reading the book, I thought maybe she'd be traumatized at how radically different the movie was from her book, but she actually loved it. Dodie sure was awfully generous.
Anyway, that's my collection. Oh, and just thought I'd let you guys in on something. I never watched the 1999 VHS copy, but I know that DVD's were really made to replace VHS tapes, but sometimes, it's best not to throw away your VHS tapes, because some stuff may be missing on the DVD. I know the DVD is digitally-remastered and all, but there's a missing sound effect on it. In the scene where the Baddun brothers are watching "What's My Crime?" after they get lectured by Cruella, when they turn the TV back on, it's supposed to make some static noises, but those static sounds were cut out of the DVD. Believe me, I know this stuff. When you watch the same movie over and over again, you memorize it pretty well, and when you watch different versions and notice something different, it will stick out.
That's about all I gotta say. Seeya next time.
