One of the Disney Animated Canon, and definitely one of the most underrated.
I saw this film theatrically in 1988; it was my brother's first theatrical experience and my fourth, but the first one I saw that wasn't a reissue.
I really love the animation considering it was one of the first animated films to heavily use computer-animation.
Also, there's the songs. There's Huey Lewis' "Once Upon a Time in New York City", which plays during the opening credits, Billy Joel's "Why Should I Worry", Ruth Pointer's "Streets of Gold", and Bette Midler's "Perfect Isn't Easy", all of which are awesome songs, but the fifth song, "Good Company", I feel is just filler.
I often wondered why this movie didn't get a home video release until after its 1996 reissue. I'm guessing it's because the people at Disney felt the film was very dated, (and it is extremely), and Walt wanted all of his movies to be timeless (even after his passing).
Anyone else want to share their thoughts on this movie or what I just talked about?

Certainly a film I enjoy, especially with Joel's voice acting as Dodger, (and of course his song along with Lewis's opening tune). Although, one thing that makes me enjoy the film a bit more is the fact that the play Francis is watching, (on the TV), and I believe tends to reference often is actually Shakespeare's tragedy, "Macbeth", which I like though not as much as "Hamlet" or "Romeo & Juliet" of course.

A lot of you may not know this, but this game had a video game! The reason not many people know about it is because it was made for the Amiga computer, and it was released about 2 months after the movie was released. I saw footage of the game on YouTube, and quite frankly...it's sh*t! This is a poor excuse for a video game, and it seemed like they put more time, money and effort into the title screen than they did to the rest of the game! I mean...well...just LOOK AT IT! youtu.be/rY7Wrz0_UEk

I remember watching that VHS a lot when I was younger. Although, I hear when it was released in the UK, it was distributed by Warner Brothers.
Wonder why that was? o.o

That game looks pretty good for 1988. (Holy cow, is that Tito smoking? That wouldn't fly today.)
I didn't see Oliver and Company until it finally came out on home video but it's one of my favorite Disney films (I'd probably put it #2 behind the animated 101). The music is great, the modern vibe worked perfectly (the use of real world brands like Ryder Trucks really made the universe feel more real), and the dogs were a good funny bunch. I didn't see this movie until well into the 1990s but it still felt "today" at the time (granted it's dated somewhat since then, that lovely "night into day" transition shot with the Twin Towers being perhaps the biggest offender).
I straight up love the climatic car chase in this one which is a pretty underrated gem. You can really only do a car chase in the New York subway in an animated film and man did they make a great one.

That game looks pretty good for 1988. (Holy cow, is that Tito smoking? That wouldn't fly today.) Well, he smoked in the movie, didn't he? Also, for some reason, there's no sign of Rita anywhere in the game. Ah, yeah. I didn't think of that until you brought it up. But still, the movie is very dated. The music's "modern vibe", as you say, is not so modern anymore. Also, Rita's hair style is definitely an 80's look without question.
