I'd like to talk about the theatrical reissues here.
As we know, 101 Dalmatians made its theatrical debut in 1961.
It's first reissue was in 1969.
Next, it was reissued in 1979. Not sure why they waited that long to release it again, but whatever.
Then it was reissued in 1985 just before Christmas. I was around at that time, but too young to be brought into theaters, so I didn't see it then.
Fortunately, it was reissued one more time in the summer of 1991, just in time for its 30th anniversary. That's when I saw the film for the first time and became a Dalmatian fan!
Though I've been wondering about something...in the mid 90's, Disney discontinued doing regular theatrical reissued for their films and focused more on video and DVD releases. But if they decided to continue releasing them in the theaters, I think I know when they would have released 101 Dalmatians. Taking into consideration how long they waited after a theatrical release before putting it out on video or DVD at the time, here's what I figured...
The movie was re-released on video in early 1999, so it's next theatrical release would have been the summer of 1998 (ironically when the TV series was in demise).
Then it would have come out in the fall of 2007 for the Platinum Edition DVD.
Then it would have come out in the fall of 2014 for the Diamond Edition Blu Ray.
That all sound about right?
The film actually did have a theatrical reissue around my area to commemorate its 50th anniversary, but it was already sold out by the time I heard about it.
