It was just announced yesterday that the My Little Pony movie is not getting an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. I’m not surprised though because... First of all, the movie flopped. It only made $48 million worldwide. Second of all, the critics hated it. It currently has a score of 45% on Rotten Tomatoes. Third of all, it’s based on a cartoon and a toy line, and since when do those movies get nominated for Oscars? Hasbro didn’t even submit this movie for an Oscar nomination. They must have been self aware that it didn’t have a chance.

MLP was very cheap to make so the lack of a high gross doesn't equal failure...as we said before. Given it isn't eligible when it meets the requirements it likely wasn't submitted for consideration by the studio.

Like I said, movies based on TV shows always flop and get negative reviews from critics, and this one is no exception. The only two exceptions I can think of off the top of my head that were the polar opposite were the Simpsons movie and the South Park Movie, the former of which is currently the second highest-grossing traditionally-Animated Film of all time Under The Lion King. In a couple years, we are getting a Bob’s Burgers Movie, and I’m sure that’ll be a success too considering it’s based on an adult cartoon like the two I mentioned previously.

I wouldn' really consider it a Flp, Belchic.
It is estimatd that the Budgt for the Film is about Eight Million, and its Box Office is about; Fourty-Eight Million, so it did make Eight Times what its possible Budgt is! If a Box Office Flp is when the Box Office is Lower than what its Budgt is; So, making Eight Times your possible Budgt is can be considerd good, Eh?
There is apparentl, a; "Making Of..." Piece, about this Film, too. Have any of you seen it, Pups?

Let's focus more on the 26 films that are eligible for a nomination. This year they are... The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales Birdboy: The Forgotten Children The Boss Baby The Breadwinner Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie Cars 3 Cinderella the Cat Coco Despicable Me 3 The Emoji Movie Ethel & Ernest Ferdinand The Girl without Hands In This Corner of the World The Lego Batman Movie The Lego Ninjago Movie Loving Vincent Mary and the Witch’s Flower Moomins and the Winter Wonderland My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea Napping Princess A Silent Voice Smurfs: The Lost Village The Star Sword Art Online: The Movie – Ordinal Scale Window Horses The Poetic Persian Epiphany of Rosie Ming From the field I suspect Pixar's Coco will win and it would not surprise me if Despicable Me 3 and Cars 3 got nominations. They changed the way animated films are nominated this year and it could mean that the mainstream CGI films get more attention than the 2D or stop motion ones... www.cartoonbrew.com/awards/oscar-rules-change-impact-indie-foreign-films-best-animated-feature-race-150099.html...but we'll have to see how it plays. One underdog, or perhaps underfox, film I would like to see get some attention from the Academy is "The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales" which just won an award at an LA animation film festival that aimed to try and bring attention to the outside shot indie flicks. "Big Bad Fox" is a French 2D film set up as anthology with three separate stories linked by a narrative that all the farm's animals are putting on a play for the audience. The main story features the titular fox who's nickname is an ironic one, he's a pathetic little red fox who when he tries to steal chickens gets beat up by them. The film has fun with this as he teams with a wolf to steal some eggs instead, hatch them, then gets the chicks fat enough to eat only to have the whole plan go to heck when the chicks imprint on him thinking he's their mother. An English teaser trailer is shown here... www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5qbPXQLU9U...And here's a full trailer, albeit in French and subtitled... www.youtube.com/watch?v=3clkH3C5VFwThe other two stories involve some of the other farm animals trying to deliver a baby stork style in one and attempting to fill in for Santa Claus/Father Christmas under the mistaken belief they killed the real the one in the other. The 2D animation here is unique in that it was apparently done in Photoshop with the characters animated frame by frame using drawings done in the program...a technique that I think Bab used years ago when he was dabbling in animation.

Really? The Emoji Movie is more Oscar worthy than the My Little Pony movie? Something is definitely wrong here!

Once again Belchic a studio has to submit its films to the Academy for Oscar nomination consideration and by all accounts Lionsgate simply choose not to do so with MLP. Studios do this from time to time, especially if they are looking to spend their money lobbying for Oscars for other films. You're from LA, you know a big part of the Oscars is backstage politicking. Doesn't mean the film is not under consideration for all categories, just that it wasn't filed for "Best Animated Film," since its a musical they could be trying for a nomination in a different category like "Best Original Song" instead if they wanted.

I did see that list and it looks legit. Lots of seemingly foreign films get nominated too.
That was a list of films that got submitted for the award and they will pick and choose.
There may be a chance that The Lego Batman Movie may be nominated due the controversial decision not to nominate The Lego Movie back in 2015. The Lego Ninjago Movie is kinda pushing their luck though.
Though seeing as all three Sony movies were submitted...
And considering it's coming out this weekend does anyone else have this suspicion that The Star may be this year's The Wild Life?

Well reviews are already coming in for Coco. It's Rotten Tomatoes score is currently at 96%. So that looks like it will be one to see over Thanksgiving. Only one out of 20+ reviews is negative.
Sad thing is? So far, nothing about The Star is said. It may not be getting screened for critics (strike one) and that's always a bad sign.
I am going to hope that it turns out to be better than it was originally from the earliest trailers; they will need a good animated movie to help them live down The Emoji Movie.

That’s weird that critics don’t even see a movie.
But anyway, of all the animated films that came out this year, Coco is the only one I see getting an Oscar nomination. We’ll see about the rest, though nothing else was extremely mind-blowing. We may end up with three independent films in the category this year.

Well reviews are now coming in for The Star.
And? The critics say...?
Oh...my...God. It... is... PASSABLE!
Its current Rotten Tomatoes score is at 62%, barely qualifying as "Fresh"!
And the movie audiences say it is at 73%, and that means they LIKE it!
Sure it won't make up for The Emoji Movie but they seem to have done something right with this one!

Okay, now I’m really starting to have doubts. I guess AniMatt is for sure putting the My Little Pony movie in his Top 5 Worst Animated Films of the year...unless Ferdinand does really bad.

Animat did his review on SONY PICTURES ANIMATION's film, the Star.
He puts it as a film with a poorly-executed story, good, (not great), animation, bland characters with passionate voice acting. And it was merely another film made for a quick cash grab.
Story is a 3, Animation is 6 Characters are 4
Overall a 4/10 with the Animat Seal of Garbage.
If Companies worked like monarchies, and I worked at Sony...I'd "execute" the CEO immediately.

Really? After what the other critics had to say about it?
Well, I guess now, here is how he ranks the film of this year:
1. The Lego Batman Movie - 90% 2. Captain Underpants - 73% 3. Despicable Me 3 - 73% 4. Smurfs: The Lost Village - 66% 5. Cars 3 - 63% 6. Leap! - 60% 7. My Little Pony: The Movie - 60% 8. The Lego Ninjago Movie - 60% 9. The Boss Baby - 43% 10. The Nut Job 2 - 43% 11. The Star - 43% 12. The Emoji Movie - 17%
I assume he will be uploading his review on Coco tomorrow. I’m hearing amazing reviews about it, so something tells me this movie is going to top his list, and he might even give it a perfect score. I’m excited about it, and I’d accept a perfect score for it. Though I’ve noticed a lot of score ties this year on AniMatt’s half, but I’m at least relieved that MLP now will be no lower than his #5 worst at this rate.

I was not planning to see the movie after some of the earlier press releases, but now I think I'm glad I will be going to see Coco.
Here's another review to help sway your thoughts on it:
Pretty sad that Sony's best animated film this year was the one about the Smurfs.
But if nothing else, it's a freaking miracle this came from the same studio that gave us The Emoji Movie and did not end up a total train wreck.
