Alright so I can’t find any bios for my characters on this forum anymore. I believe I deleted them for being out of date. I decided I will open myself up for writing gifts this year for Secret Santa, So I’ll be updating all their profiles with more emphasis on their core personality traits than their backstory so it may be more useful from a writing perspective.
I’ll start with Sandy. Now, Sandy is a very complex character, so I’m going to break her personality up into 3 sections. The Good, The Bad, and the Weird. That’s really the best way I can think to divide up all this information.
THE GOOD
I’ll start with her good traits, so you don’t read her bad first and hate her. =P
Sandy is a fun loving, hyper intelligent dog. In spite of her apparent behavior which will be listed in "the bad" she has a very strong sense of right and wrong. Her moral compass is just a bit… skewed… her morals are mostly based around her individualistic nature. She owns the consequences of all of her actions. She doesn’t expect anyone to help her out of a situation, though she won’t turn down free help if they offer. She will likely just consider them an idiot for offering their time for free.
She is honest… well at least when it comes to lying directly. For example if she gets caught trying to steal something, she will just admit to trying to steal it as she views lying to get out of trouble, or to scam people as weakness. However that won’t stop her from trying to steal something in the first place. She figures if they didn’t want it stolen, they should have… uh… looked after it better. It’s sort of a weird thieve’s honor. She feels that if she is able to get away with something sneaky without resorting to just lying then she has earned the rewards of her efforts. That being said, she is mostly a good dog and tries to not steal unless it’s important… also she only steals if she thinks the person she is stealing from can afford to lose it. She won’t steal from the poor or anything. Pranking is another thing though! Beware April first when Sandy is around. She will prank ANYONE.
She also holds others to the same standards that she holds herself to. Meaning if someone happens to get in trouble, well, she doesn’t have to help them out of it. Yet, in spite of her multiple deliberate attempts to MURDER it, there is usually a nagging feeling that Lilly calls her “conscience” that won’t let her just abandon someone in need if it is actually important. For example, she may think it’s not her responsibility to risk her life saving some jerk humans from a homicidal water spirit that is OBVIOUSLY preparing to kill them. It's their fault for being dumb and walking into a trap! She may even try to leave, but she will have her "conscience" nagging her, telling her that walking away would be wrong and it won't stop until she goes back and saves them. She always saves them. Then she goes back to researching ways to kill a conscience. She always thinks she has killed it his time, then it just comes back when it really counts! They're worse than cockroaches! GEEZE!
She’s also… very non violent. That’s not really because of moral reasons, it’s because her instincts when she is confronted are simply to run rather than fight. She’s exceptionally fast though, even for a Dalmatian, which is already one of the fastest breeds. Outrunning Sandy is actually very difficult. She’s used to running from monsters that want to kill her. If you can catch her, however, she will be helpless and probably just take whatever you do to her… Then she will plot a complex revenge that will take place when you least suspect it.
She is usually accepting of other lifestyles, even though she may have judgements of other lifestyles herself; Lilly’s Christianity, for example. She can't stand someone telling anyone how to think, act, groom themselves, ect and she will usually stand up in defense of the minority.
She is fairly intelligent… Well intelligent in certain ways. Her mind works a bit like a physics calculator. She is naturally able to predict mechanical processes, such as where a ball will land when you throw it, which spring she would need to hold up 5 lb plate, ect. She mostly does these things without working out the maths, though she is also able to calculate extremely complex maths equations in her head. However, in any area outside of physics and maths her intelligence is pretty average. Solving riddles, speaking with proper grammar, Understanding the emotions of others… are actually fairly difficult for her. Physics and math are constants. They make sense! The behavior of living creatures does not!
Her lack of understanding of living creatures doesn’t stop her from being quite the social butterfly though. She has no problems whatsoever just walking up and talking to a complete stranger. She is willing to talk to anyone for a short while, but if the conversation doesn’t lead anywhere interesting fairly quickly she will probably just cut it off and talk to someone else. She tends to be very perky when talking to someone and likes to do fun high energy or thrilling things.
She is a thrill seeker by nature. That's part of why she enjoys the dangerous scientific field of supernaturology. She will MASSIVELY enjoy things like bungee jumping, sky diving, roller coasters or any thrill seeking events. When she is in situations that are actually dangerous, like being chased by a dangerous monster, she is absolutely terrified in that particular moment, however, when it's all over and she is safe, she will likely experience a rush of euphoria and her feelings toward the event will dramatically change and she will think it was really fun. She may even go "WOOOOOOO! YEAH!" or simply laugh hysterically at the fact that she is still alive. It depends on how intense the event was and how close she came to dying.
Given that she is a proud social outcast she has no fear of embarrassment at all. Therefore, she’s usually quite cheerful and perky. She will quite happily jump up on stage during a party and dance and sing without a single care, which she actually quite likes doing. Singing and dancing is a fun hobby of hers that she likes to do when she isn’t working on projects. She’s particularly a fan of boy bands because their music is so… danceable! Performing in musicals is something she has always wanted to do but never had the opportunity.
THE BAD
Sandy has a number of very big but realistic personality flaws. Of course, she would tell you that what constitutes a personality flaw is ENTIRELY subjective.
As stated in “the good” Sandy is naturally contrarian and doesn’t like being told what to do. And while this trait can be good, as it leads to her defending others, it can also be bad when it leads to her being a jerk to someone that doesn't mean any harm. Telling her that she must do something is a really good way to get her to do the exact opposite. Telling her that she isn’t capable of doing something is a great way to get her to try to do it, and telling her that she isn’t allowed to do something is a good way to get her to do just that.
So… for example, if someone tells Sandy that she must wear a helmet to do something, like sled down a dangerous hill in the winter, she would be the type to either flat out refuse to wear one, or if they wouldn’t let her go, she would come back wearing full German uniform from World War Two just to annoy them and be offensive, then tell them. “You said I had to wear a helmet!” She wouldn’t even care if she got banned for life after that. She has such a stubborn streak that she will knowingly shoot herself in the foot sometimes if it means she doesn’t have to compromise. That does come with limitations. She knows “some hills aren’t worth dying on.” those hills tend to be the ones with higher consequences. She is willing to put her stubbornness aside if being stubborn risks alienating someone she cares about or getting kicked out of the bark brigade and sent back home with her mother.
Along with having difficulty getting over her stubbornness, she also has difficulty being kind to anyone that she doesn’t like. Even when she knows it’s wrong to be a jerk to them she can’t be nice to them because… she… just… doesn’t like them! She will prank, mock, and be unnecessarily moody with them, even if she would be more patient with others. She may feel a bit guilty about this if she knows they don’t deserve it… at that particular moment… but that won’t stop her from doing it.
Sandy’s feelings toward others greatly affects her behavior toward them in both directions. She will be more short tempered and less understanding with females, with the exception of Lilly, who is her best friend and gets better treatment from Sandy than anyone else. For example, if someone asked Sandy to put an angel in her Christaween decorations, Sandy would respond with a strong "NO WAY!" But if Lilly asked Sandy the same thing, she would respond with "Uuuuugh…. Fine. ONE angel… you can put it with the three wise zombies…>_>"
Likewise she has a soft spot for someone she sees as innocent, like Camera, and won't insult him even though he is objectively dumb by even normal standards.
Her attitude with any other females is the exact opposite and she will react worse than if males did the same thing. For example, if a female… like Stirfry was the reason she couldn’t get the engineering job she wanted because it was already filled she would hold a grudge forever and constantly complain about how incompetent she is and prank her constantly and refuse to help her for anything. However, if a male were the reason, she would probably just get over it.
It's not impossible for females to be Sandy’s friend, obviously, Lilly could tell you that. It simply takes the patience of a saint and spending enough time with her to get on her good side.
Even from males she expects a certain amount of confidence and decisiveness and a stereotypical aire of masculinity. If a male doesn’t meet her idea of masculinity, then she will likely tease him about it. If he takes the teasing in good humor she will probably warm up to him, but if he gets offended she will likely lose all respect for him and become a total jerk to him.
Now does this make her a hypocrite because she doesn't like when someone else tells others how to act? Sandy admits she is a little bit of a hypocrite for that. But on the other paw, nobody is entitled to her respect and she just doesn't respect weakness. So… she isn't worried about it. They can earn her respect by putting up with a little bit of harmless teasing from her for a while and not being a wimp about it.
THE WEIRD
And with that we move on to the weird! Are you surprised that the “proud social outcast” is weird? As mentioned above she absolutely loves Halloween and absolutely hates Christmas. So every December she celebrates “Christaween” instead. Christaween is… kind of like a mockery of Christmas. She will set up Christmas decorations with a Halloween aesthetic. Instead of Christmas lights she will put up Halloween colored lights. She might have a black or dead christmas tree, covered in orange and purple lights, with red tinsel intended to look like blood and various Halloween ornaments. At the top of the tree she may set up a pentagram instead of a normal star or a witch instead of an angel. She’ll set up nativity scenes with zombies and stuff.
The reason she does this isn’t really a Grinch or Scrooge like hatred of charity and good will and the values of Christmas. The MAIN reason she hates Christmas so much is because… IT’S CONSTANTLY OVERSHADOWING HALLOWEEN! Seriously! She gets so annoyed when Christmas is celebrated in November or October!
The other reason is because she doesn’t like Christianity, and Christmas is a very Christian Holiday. It’s important to know that Sandy’s education came entirely from her mentors, Mortimer and Samuel, and didn’t focus on normal history as we know it. Instead, she was taught history from the perspective of witches and magic and they didn’t exactly get along with Christians in the past, so she got... a very one sided version of things. Her knowledge of Christians mostly has to do with witch trials and the extermination of magical creatures across the world. For the longest time she thought all Christians were violent marauding hypocrites that destroyed anything they didn’t understand until she learned her best friend Lilly was one. Now she simply thinks the vast majority Christians are violent marauding hypocrites that destroy anything they don’t understand. Lilly says this is “progress”.
She also has very… bizarre ideas about other countries for the same reasons. Dang it, Jim! She’s a supernaturologist, not an anthropologist! So she still thinks England is a super religious kingdom that burns witches to this very day. She thinks Russia is still controlled by the Soviet Union who deliberately destroyed magical creatures and covered up their existence, ect.
Speaking of Samuel and Mortimer, we must mention that she is deep in debt to Samuel and has an agreement with him to find and give him first rights to buy any magical artifacts she finds in order to pay off her debt. She is constantly on call, allowing him to call her up any time he wants and have her do something for him. It could be either investigating a lead for a magical artifact he found, or simply bringing him some fish that he ordered from a store but they didn’t deliver. Her biggest life goal is to get out of Samuel’s debt so she can finally be free. So she jumps on anything that could be even remotely valuable. By the way, he calls her with a crystal ball because he's too cheap to pay for a phone for her. Just more proof of what a tightwad he is... >_>
She also assumes everyone else is able to understand things like her. She doesn't think she is very intelligent, but rather anyone who can't see what she sees is just dumb. She also speaks in Buffy Speak due to her lack of education. She isn't a big fan of technical terms anyway except for when it comes to supernatural terminology. Then she is very strict.
But otherwise, she would walk up to someone replacing a broken part in a machine and say something like " What are you doing?! That part broke because this other part here is rusty which made it swing a second out of time and hit that part! Unless you replace THIS part and lubricate it, it's just going to wear out that part again, ya doofus!"... she also says doofus. Nobody is really sure why. I don't think that word has been in common use since the 90s. She wasn't even born in the 90s!
Speaking of which, she is somewhat oblivious to technology from before her time. If she were to find a video tape, for example, she would have to study it to figure out that it's some kind of very inefficient data storage device. In this case it seems to only store a video file called "the ring" or at least that's what they wrote on the device. She really isn't sure why anyone would want to store video in such an inefficient way and it's not really worth figuring out or seeing what the video is. She's just going to throw it away.
She also has a weird thing for Werewolves… as in she is attracted to them. She knows that she can't really date one cause it would just eat the whole meal by itself then have her for dessert, but she can at least watch them on the cameras she has set up throughout the forest and imagine what it would be like [SECTION DELETED] Sandy, you can't put that kind of information on here! This is a PG 13 forum! There could be kids here!
Aside from werewolves Sandy is attracted to all males. Particularly ones that have short fur and a muscular body. Dobermans are actually a favorite breed of hers. Any male that is single and is masculine, though is a candidate for her getting flirty with… and she does like to get flirty. She may even accept advances from a non masculine male... ahem... Lupus... under the right conditions.
Well, I think that’s enough. There are probably more layers to her but I covered the most important parts of her personality here. This is already pretty long so I’ll just briefly include some important relationship information here at the bottom. I will list the name of someone then give a description of her relationship with them.
RELATIONSHIPS
Lilly: Sandy’s best friend.
Chive: Sandy constantly trolls him because he’s so over protective of Lilly and always gets angry at Sandy whenever she puts Lilly in danger. She mocks his height and lack of masculinity and loves teasing him.
Camera: Sandy treats him like a little brother. They aren’t related but she feels a bit of a responsibility for him like a sister.
Stirfry: She hates Stirfry because Stirfry is the reason she couldn’t get the engineering position. She constantly pranks and mocks Stirfry and calls her an idiot. Stirfry is completely oblivious and thinks Sandy’s pranks are just Sandy’s way of making sure that Stirfry doesn’t get bored with her day, and Sandy’s insults are just friendly teasing.
Samuel: Sandy both respects and loathes Samuel at the same time. He is a good cat and mentor and helps her a lot… but she HATES being his lackey. She also in some way thinks that he takes advantage of her at times. She knows that’s just her emotions telling her that, though.
Mortimer: Sandy looks up to him like a father figure almost. He is at least her favorite teacher. He was the one who introduced her to the supernatural and pulled her out of the miserable life she had before. Unfortunately he is almost always in other parts of the world studying some magical phenomena. He does write and send her artifacts on occasion, however. Those are usually delivered by a pigeon or hawk depending on the size of the package and time of year.
Clayton: She thinks Clayton is a… charming doofus. She respects him, but he makes so many STUPID mistakes.
Lupus: Sandy thinks he’s a lovable doofus. Seriously… he’s wimpy, pathetic, very cringey, not too bright… but he has proven to be extremely loyal to her, sticking with her through a lot and she respects that. They have a romantic relationship but it’s not an exclusive romance. Sandy is perfectly happy to chase other guys and Lupus knows that. She still appreciates that her lovable doofus will always be there for her even when some other guys won’t though.
I’ll start with Sandy. Now, Sandy is a very complex character, so I’m going to break her personality up into 3 sections. The Good, The Bad, and the Weird. That’s really the best way I can think to divide up all this information.
