Since an undisclosed guest asked me to, I thought I’d start a topic about the animated films of 2020.
Based on my research, here is what I have so far as to what is to come next year along with my first thoughts. Bare in mind, this list is subject to change:
Onward - Break out the tissues! The theaters are gonna flood! The Queen’s Corgi - CUTENESS OVERLOAD! Trolls World Tour - Cash Cows! Scoob! - Cautiously optimistic. SpongeBob: Sponge On the Run - WHY WON’T YOU JUST DIE??? Soul - Another Pixar film already? Eh, why not? Minions: Rise of Gru - Oh, brother! Bob’s Burgers - Does this really need a movie? The Mitchells vs. the Machines - This sounds really messed up! Raya and the Last Dragon - At least it’s not another sequel. The Croods 2 - A little too late there, Dreamworks.

This year is almost over. I decided to revise my thoughts on the upcoming animated films of 2020. AniMat will be posting his recap of 2019 tomorrow, which should include his first glance at 2020, so I might revise it again then.

Queen's Corgi came out in England last year, mostly flopped, and has been redubbed for its American release. Given the plot involves President Trump having his own corgi and trying to mate it to a royal one there isn't much hope that will be good. Trump hates dogs IRL too.

So I just saw AniMat’s look at 2020. Here’s what he had to say: Onward - Don’t know if I want this, Pixar. Trolls World Tour - Looks great, but the movie might not be. Scoob! - PLEASE LET THIS BE THE COMEBACK OF HANNA-BARBARA IT DESERVES! SpongeBob: Sponge On the Run - As a SpongeBob fan, looks like it can be fun Soul - I KNOW I WANT THIS, PIXAR! Minions: Rise of Gru - Fine! You can have one more movie, but make it worth it! Bob’s Burgers - I don’t watch the show, but I am curious about this. The Mitchells vs. the Machines - Sounds lame!...but I could be wrong. Raya and the Last Dragon - THIS IS GONNA BE EPIC! I CAN FEEL IT! The Croods 2 - Are you sure people still want this after all these years? Because I...don’t, to be honest. I rest my case on my original thoughts. What would you say, Trey_Vore?

Looks like there won't be much room for error in 2020, on the other hand these entries sound more promising. Anyway... Onward - Gimmicky, but... okay. Trolls World Tour - Rainbow-colored barf! Scoob! - I'm no Scooby fan so we'll see? SpongeBob: Sponge On the Run - I like! Soul - This looks great! Minions: Rise of Gru - Yes, but... how much longer...? Bob’s Burgers - Sure! The Mitchells vs. the Machines - Don't trust it. Raya and the Last Dragon - Spidey-sense says yes! The Croods 2 - So... uncanceled?

So judging by what AniMat, Trey_Vore and I said about the upcoming animated films of this year, if we were a trio of critics who worked together on previewing these movies, here’s how our thumbs would rank: (The first is Mat’s, the second is Trey’s, the third is mine.) Onward: 👎 👎 👍 Trolls: World Tour: 👎 👎 👎 Scoob!: 👍 👎 👍 SpongeBob: Sponge on the Run: 👍 👍 👎 Soul: 👍 👍 👍 Minions: Rise of Gru: 👎 👍 👎 Bob’s Burgers: 👍 👍 👎 The Mitchells Vs. The Machines: 👎 👎 👎 Raya and the Last Dragon: 👍 👍 👍 The Croods 2: 👎 👎 👎 Also, if I were to make my predictions for the best and worst of this year, based on my opinion, I’m predicting... BEST: #5 - Trolls World Tour #4 - Scoob! #3 - Soul #2 - Raya and the Last Dragon #1 - Onward WORST: #5 - The Croods 2 #4 - Minions: The Rise of Gru #3 - The Mitchells vs. The Machines #2 - Bob’s Burgers: The Movie #1 - SpongeBob: Sponge on the Run

I'll probably go ahead and see it. - Trolls: World Tour just looks like more kiddie claptrap that just will likely disappoint. - Scoob! while I never was a Scooby fan, I won't completely shut out. It might be good. - SpongeBob: Sponge On the Run should be fun. - Soul looks like it will be a good movie. - Minions: Rise of Gru while I am a Despicable Me/ Minions fan, I kinda wonder how much longer this can go before sequelitis kicks in. - Bob's Burgers being a fan of mature cartoons and since a movie about Family Guy would be too divisive to be profitable, I welcome it. - The Mitchells vs. the Machines I see no info for, so I don't trust it. - Raya and the Last Dragon is from Disney, so I am confident it will be worth it. - The Croods 2 I was not asking for. Those are my thoughts.

I personally can’t wait to see this movie! It looks like a lot of fun! Not sure why Pixar fans have such low expectations for it though. While the concept of this sequel does look interesting, at the same time, it just looks like a quick cash grab. I’m not a huge Scooby fan either, but based on what I saw in the trailers, this actually looks promising. I probably won’t waste my money on it though. I was not asking for this at all! Then again, this is coming from a SpongeBob hater. While I’m not as excited about this one as I am for Onward, I’m still interested and will give it a go. While I do love Despicable Me, the Minions are my least favorite thing about the franchise. Considering this is supposed where the Minions first met Gru, I doubt there will be any more Minions sequels since we have come full circle now. Though that’s not to say we won’t get any more Despicable Me sequels. I still don’t understand why so many people like this show. For the record, I did give this show a chance and watched two episodes of it, but it just didn’t sit well on me. Yeah, there’s a chance we might not even get this one this year. Though considering it’s being made by Sony, it could either go well (like Spider-Verse) or terribly (like the Emoji Movie). Based on what I saw of it at D23, it looks pretty epic, but I’m mostly glad it’s an original idea and not another sequel...but I’m not entirely sold on Raya’s design (She looks an awful lot like Moana, and do we really need another Moana just a few short years after the first one?). I saw the first Croods and thought it was above average, but probably not good enough for me to want to see a sequel, especially since it’s been so many years. It’s not like this is The Incredibles or something. Also, I wonder what made Dreamworks decide to change their mind about this movie after they announced that it was canceled.

Well guys, this weekend we are getting the first major animated movie of the year: Onward.
It looks good, lots of good reviews on RT at 85%. Here's the consensus:
It may suffer in comparison to Pixar's classics, but Onward makes effective use of the studio's formula -- and stands on its own merits as a funny, heartwarming, dazzlingly animated adventure.
Looks like we have a good one to start the year!

Same, you can't judge a movie just by looking at the promotional poster.

Here's my thoughts on the movie Onward:
This movie is about two elf brothers living in a post-fantasy world, where the past is full of fantastical creatures, with the epic adventure aspect having settled down into the more mundane. On Ian’s 16th birthday, he and his older brother Barley are now capable of understanding who their deceased father truly was and get to temporarily resurrect him. In doing so, it’s only half-way done and must find a means to complete the spell, depending on whether or not there really is magic left in the world.
In the past, Pixar was originally the studio that people would look forward to seeing when everyone else was not consistent. Most people will probably point towards Pixar’s 2010 animated smash Toy Story 3 as the film where they creatively peaked. Remember, they were the studio who had Up and the aforementioned third Toy Story for the Oscar for “Best Picture”. Since then, we saw them go through a bunch of sequels to existing movies, which while not terrible, seemed to just point towards the idea that they just had to be more excepting of the nature of the business.
I will say though, the less said of their two Cars sequels the better.
Onward doesn’t try to do anything outrageous or raise the bar that Pixar made for themselves. The movie does tell a competent story with appealing characters, and while the fantasy element doesn’t feel deep enough to warrant it’s continuing theme (it could have been omitted with just the brothers trying to find something mundane about their father and would likely have been the same), but the kids probably won’t care about that as it does provide the movie with something interesting to look at, almost like how the Monsters, Inc. monsters were as college students at Monsters University.
I do like some other aspects that were included for the movie, namely the heart you’d probably expect from a Pixar film. At one point Ian does want to learn more about his birth father but the story leads him to question if whether his older brother is correct in that the quest they embark on is not as straightforward as just driving down a road, and if he truly did get all he really needed to know about father from his immediate family. It’s honestly some good writing I enjoyed.
Another thing I will say is like last year’s Toy Story 4, the movie does not have a true villain. Sure, there is the dragon that more or less comes in to provide some degree of conflict (and something you would consider a climax) but it otherwise has no need for a true antagonist.
It is not going to replace any of your current Pixar favorites from your list but it is a solid movie that people will enjoy. Any other studio would consider this movie amazing and Oscar worthy but it might disappoint if you are looking for that prior Pixar magic. Just go in with reasonable expectations and it will prove satisfying. Time will tell if Pixar’s later film Soul will ultimately be better but it is worthy of a recommendation and it’s a good first major animated movie to start the year with.
The movie does start with a short Simpsons cartoon called “Play Date With Destiny” that runs five minutes about Maggie Simpson being enticed with a new boy on a playdate at a park. It’s an enjoyable short cartoon that thankfully doesn’t end up overshadowing the movie you put down money to see, like how “Maggie Simpson in The Longest Daycare” did with Ice Age: Continental Drift.
