I know I previously said I'd skip ParaNorman, but after hearing the good reviews, I reconsidered and I have to say it was actually pretty good. It reminded me a bit of Hocus Pocus and it's a good way to get pumped for Halloween.
The biggest problem it may have is it might not be appropriate for very young kids.

Paranorman is almost a bit like Coraline, (even though it is made by the same folks). At first, it doesn't entirely seem like such a bad film. However, if you watch it, despite the 3D animation, there is at least one scene of practical/partial nudity, and at least once, does Coraline swear/curse. Still, Coraline is a very good film to me.

"At the same time, a movie geared for toddlers called Oogieloves in The Big Balloon Adventure, is making box-office history--the bad kind!"
The trailer for that PoS keeps running as an ad, oddly, on a racing stats site I use. Did anyone actually think that wasn't going to bomb badly?

AniMat just reviewed ParaNorman. Here's what he says:
Story: 8/10 Animation: 9/10 Characters: 6/10
ParaNorman: 8/10 - Great!
Ultimately it seemed to have a great story and excellent animation, but the characters are... just decent. Not sure how it will rank next to The Pirates! Band of Misfits and Brave as he thought they had better characters but ParaNorman had a stronger story. But chances are good it could make his Best List.

Okay... I just came back from Hotel Transylvania.
I saw it without reading any reviews and I will say...
...it's not that great.
It's not terrible. Just not great.
What I liked was the admirable voice cast (I will admit I didn't suspect that Adam Sandler was voicing Dracula), it's non-violent, it manages to be funny and I will admit Dracula's daughter Mavis is nice to look at. That might just be my hormones talking.
But there seems to be several problems. There is not much in terms of character development. Well, I don't think we need to re-establish who characters like Count Dracula, the Wolfman and Frankenstein's monster are, as they've been around for so long, but they don't seem to give any deeper reason why the monsters appear to be outcasts if they aren't really bad. I don't think merely being gross is really a reason.
Then there is the somewhat jerky animation, the fact that like Brave, there doesn't seem to be much of a villain (Quasimodo comes close, but no more than for a few minutes) and the fact the movie seems kinda jokey.
It's not a bad film. Just... kinda there. After all the animated films I've seen this year, I am going to predict this is going to be AniMat's pick for the Worst Animated Film of 2012.

So far the reviews for Frankenweenie seem to be pretty good.
On Rotten Tomatoes it has a score of 81%.

Well, judging by the reviews so far on the animated films of this year, if the category for Best Animated Film at the Academy Awards has five nominations, I'm predicting the nominees will be:
Secret World of Arriety Brave Frankenweenie Paranorman Pirates! Band of Misfits (the latter may be replaced with Rise of the Guardians if it does way better in theaters)
Though, I'm sure it'll be nothing like that since there were less than 16 animated films released this year, and I'm sure they'll need to throw in a foreign film that didn't get an international release (unless Arriety counts).

AniMat just reviewed Hotel Transylvania. Here's what he says:
The Story: 3/10 The Animation: 5/10 The Characters: 4/10
Bad story, mediocre animation and poor characters.
Hotel Transylvania (2012): 4/10 - Poor!
He does say that ParaNorman and FrankenWeenie would be better choices for your Halloween movie-going fix.
And it just earned his "Seal of Garbage", so I think he may have found the Worst Animated Film of the Year.

And I thought it was a good film... the advertisements are misleading. Good thing I still haven't watched it.

I kinda saw that coming. At the beginning of this year, he gave a brief 1-3 word thought on all 11 upcoming animated films of this year. For Hotel Transylvania, he said, "HELP ME JEBUS", so he somehow knew it was going to be bad.

So now we know which would be the worst of the three Halloween movies this year.
Having seen all three I will agree. My letter grades for all three would be:
ParaNorman: B+ Hotel Transylvania: D+ Frankenweenie: B

I have yet to see Frankenweenie.
I did find Hotel Transylvania online and.. I'm glad I didn't pay to see it -x- it really wasn't as interesting as I thought it would be.
But is it just me, or are most animated 2012 movies deciding to not include villains (or give them VERY minimal screentime) and instead show the overprotective parent as the 'villain' figure?
I ask because I noticed this with Brave and Hotel Transylvania.

Well, it is almost relevant to reality. But, yeah, it does seem like that. It practically seems like some of the stories are rather being based wholly/mainly on prior knowledge of certain tales, (Frankenweenie, Frankenstein), or reality, (overprotective parents).

I am wishing to see Frankenweenie, when it comes out over here in the UK. My Sister got a plush of Sparky from Disney Store.
Although, I was looking in the Newspaper, and they had an article about the film. In the images, the caption read "Victor Frankenstein (Left) and his Dog; Sparky (Right)." I looked at the images and I realised, they got the wrong image. It wasn't Victor in the photo, it was E.Gore! Considering that a majority of Publicity Photos is of Victor and Sparky, I find it a VERY Difficult to mistake Victor for someone who looks like the obvious Igor character!
I was also looking at characters in the movie and apparently there is someone in it called; Mr. Burgermeister. Is this a sequel to "Santa Claus is Coming To Town"? (jk)
